i am agaisnt horse racing! those poor horses are bred to run their hearts out everyday, and they get surgery to make their throats bigger to breath better which causes them to barf up all of their food, and most of them break their legs, or go crazy, or have lung problems! its not fair to those horses! i say they are all abused and i dont care what anybody else says! all to get money on betting

its so sad..

and even though they love to run, its cruel to make them run more than they want to!
ive seen countless horses get put down. ad even after some of them stop racing they cant even do anything else becuase they cant breath or just want to run so much they do anything. so its people that made them want to run so much not only the horses

i had a really good debate on this subject, here on yahoo answers. I am against horse racing, and i have done RESEARCH to prove, that racehorses are treated cruelly, live short lives, are FORCED to run, and are born, not for love, but for money. Thanx for making a stand.

It all depends on the track and the caliber of people who own and train the horses. There are people who will run injured horses by giving them painkillers. One of the most popular is bute, which horses are tested for now to prevent that exact thing. Owners and trainers who truly care for their horses and want them to have long careers take excellent care of them.

My friend in high school had an ex race horse as her "pet". I saw no evidence that he was ever treated badly, he was not head shy (which horses are if they've been beaten), had a firendly disposition and was fine to ride (I used to ride him when she got a second horse). He was a gelding, and didn't win many races, so he was sold and my friend's family got him.

There is nothing inherently wrong in a sport that encourages horses to do what they do natrually. I have ridden horses that are competitive and don't like other horses to pass them - as soon as that happens, the ears go back and the horse picks up the pace. Some horses have that spirit and would literally die for you, some don't.

Just as in any sport - especially ones that use animals - you will have people who will mistreat animals just to make a buck.

OK first of all horses can not throw up AT ALL!!! Many of my friends race and i have been to the track on many occasions and most of those owners LOVE their horses but the little percent that do only run for money get all the media attention and that is wh people don't like racing. You really don't know much about racing because if you did you would realize that for those people racing is not just to run horses, it is their liveliness. I know that some owners and jockies would not be where they are if they did not belive in the sport. Also the retired race horses are being put up for adoption and i have had trained many of them, They are not crazy, have no lung problems, and all the ones i have trained have turned out to be great horses with wonderful attitudes.

While I respect your position against horse racing and even agree that some things in the sport are not "nice;" you do not know your facts. These horses are treated better than most people and even the lowest level claimer get treated well. Research what you're talking about before you open your trap. They do not have throat surgery, most do not break their legs, they don't go crazy or have an inordinate amount of lung problems. Some people believe they are exploited and abused and that's a legitimate opinion, but the facts are the facts. It is sad that bad things happen, but they happen to the family dog too. Let's keep it all in persepective and factual.

Some people believe that they themselves have more awareness of what exist in this world than a horse. betting and wanting or praying that a horse has an accident so their ticket will win is wrong. People who use a method of how a horse might win a race is ok. horse racing is there and betting a small portion of ones income is ok, just like any other sport. :)

it is cruel. If a horse is racing it should be done without bidding and 09842923487290 people. It should just eb a casual run or jolt. The things some of these horses have to got through. It makes me sad at heart watching them euthanize them right at the trackbut sometimes it has to be done. I'm not saying horses shouldn't be out and getting exercise but do you see us friggin watching cow races. It's unjust.

like most businesses that involve animals or animal products, its all about the bottom line...money. Most of them do not break their legs or go crazy and just about the only horses that I know of that race every week are the standardbreds (harness racers) most racehorses are treated pretty well but pushed hard when racing or training...and if you think about it, everything thats done in this country from animal abuse to mass media about the oscars is about money and image, or what the media would have you think is important or what to symphatize with, fake royalty and how above the common person actress x or athlete y is...

Horses cannot physically barf...
Also a horse that runs a race does not race again for weeks
Just so you know, that is why there is colic. Now I know horse racing is the topic here but if we are going to say it is cruel we should say cross country is cruel, in fact all horse sports are cruel. (Sarcasm) Sorry but factual arguements are helpful.

Yes, although that's true, you need to remember that horses love running. A horse that doesn't want to run isn't going to make a good racehorse, so chances are, it won't become one. But you are right. I don't think that it's fair to the horses that they're often put down and easily injured.

*Actually, there's a story on Yahoo! about a racehorse that was put down...see source*
