Sad. Gone. Cruel?

Sad...yes, life is sad in many ways. We all must have hopes and dreams. We kindle them and always pray for the best. We have aspirations. We make plans. We make preparation.

All that and more went on just prior to the Kentucky Derby, while many were feeling good and betting on longshots...ladies were wearing big hats...and the sun shone out like the heavens were rejoicing. And then, out of the blue came this wonderful colt, charging away from the crowd and stamping himself as a new champion. A champion was crowned that day, and his name was Barbaro.

Barbaro came and went, as did many other great champions. We love them while we had them, and we remember them when they leave us. We need to be reminded of champions for they exist in all forms. Some are obscure. Some don't appear great but are truly great. Some compete in the public eye. Some labor where nobody goes. When they leave us, we knew what we had, and we know what we lost.

Was what we asked Barbaro to do truly cruel? To many out there, the competition of horseracing has it's bad side and like other sports, is wanting for improvement. To admit that asking young horses to run their hearts out is actually cruel...few will admit to that.

When young horses are asked to do too much, then you might be right...it's cruel. Racehorses don't come into full bloom until they reach at least four years of age. The business expects too much from them when they are still young and fragile. That is why not many see their ninth birthday. A horse can live up to sixty years old, and that equates to human beings. I have to agree, racing them so young for the sake of satisfying the racing public is cruel. Then again, so much going on these days is just as cruel...and one has to ask themself, where does it stop?

Every racehorse has a shot of winning at some point in their lifetime. Then, greed sets in, and people keep believing they are machines and can win endlessly.

Two weeks after the Kentucky Derby (some feel that wasn't enough time for rest), we had a glimpse of what can and does go wrong. Then we all feel a sense of loss and disgust.

The Barbaro saga will go on, and more colts are getting into shape to compete again soon. Many feel we never will see a Triple Crown champion again. The tide has turned...too many young animals with too little time given for development...and too much dependence on medications when they should be roaming the green grass country and waiting for their moment of glory when they are fully developed.

Cruel?

It is very sad but it was the right choice. He had been put through enough and it was time for him to be out of suffering. I do not care about horse racing as long as the horses are happy and are not harmed on purpose in anyway.

Yes, it's cruel.

If his sperm wasn't worth it's weight in gold he would have been put down right after the race...as he should have been.

He suffered needlessly for months.
