Go to a hardware store and buy a 3 or 4 foot piece of 3" abs pipe and some hose clamps. You should be able to strap it to the top bar and run it out the back as to not impede with wheels, peddling, etc. Wrap a towel around the stick to secure it better in the pipe and that should hold it well enough and make it so you don't have to hold or adjust it while riding. Had a friend that did it for ski's and it worked well.

make a strap on the hockey stick and sling it AROUND your back, eliminating the possibility of it getting caught in the spokes...

I had to bike 5 miles for work with a tennis racket and that worked well...

Make a sling on your back like a ninja carrying a kendo weapon. You want to make sure it keeps away from your wheel spokes and leaves your hands free.

ive put it across the handlebars before. either that or attach it to your back somehow
