Dunno, maybe Elvis and his pelvis had something to do with it!

LOL, seriously though.........most Christians (self included) find the lyrics offensive. I just can't see the point of the vulgarity in them. And this is coming from someone who has been to see Aerosmith, Saliva and KISS. I just wish I would've gone to see Led Zeppelin and Queen when I had the chance, darn it! LOL!

There's an awful lot of rock music out there I like and I'm always up for listening to some new genre of music, but hip hop, gangsta rap and some of the really heavy metal stuff just leave me cold. I think it's a waste of talent.

And I do listen to an awful lot of Christian rock, but give me that old time rock and roll any day compared to most of the stuff that's out there today. LOL, I like Celtic music and classical, too.

A lot of fundamentalist religions do feel that rock music belongs to Satan and, sadly, they also include contemporary Christian rock, too. They fear the influence of the lyrics, I think, more than the actual beat (rhythms?) of the songs. And they do have a valid point. Look at some of the horrendous things kids have done and then later mentioned how heavily influenced they were by certain songs or artists. A copout? Could be.

Not all rock is satanic.
I have worked in radio for many years, playing everything from oldies to hard-rock formats.
It's all in the content - the lyrics.
The one thing I've found with most artists is that they're very proud of their beliefs. They won't hide them in "Backward-masking" subtle statements. Most will tell you exactly how they feel about God and satan.
Years ago it was popular for groups to use techniques like backward-masking to get the interest of the listener. The popular thought was that the unconscious-mind could interpret backward messages and affect or effect behavior even if the conscious-mind could not.
For the most part this is silly, but there were a number of groups who did use it to some extent as a promotional ploy.
Electric Light Orchestra did it on a few of their earlier albums like "Face The Music". When branded as demonic by the conservative Christians Jeff Lynn then brought out the album "Secret Messages" which was a deliberate stab at the religious right, and did contain some innocuous backward messages.
Other bands labeled as demonic because of backward-masking, whether real or perceived are;
The Beatles - a few of their later albums contains innocuous messages,
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven - perceived.
Slayer's 1985 album Hell Awaits is a prominent example of hidden Satanic messages in music. The album starts with a demonic-sounding voice that, when played backwards, urges "Join Us" over and over at increasing volumes.
The Cradle of Filth song "Dinner at Deviants Palace" consists almost entirely of ambient sounds and a reversed reading of the Lord's Prayer.
Some of the controversy deals with songs that are not necessarily Satanic, but simply anti-Christian.
Black-metal band Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger album contains, when listened to backwards, "In the name of God, let the churches burn".
Death-metal band Christian Death's song "Mysterium Iniquitatis" is sung almost entirely backwards, and when reversed, expresses atheistic beliefs.
But, most bands opt to show their beliefs in more open ways. If they're going to say it backwards they will most certainly show it in their actions, dress and specifically their lyrics.
I've heard it said so many times before that Ozzy is not a Satanist, and even Marilyn Manson's grandmother claims he's just a nice boy putting on an act - but the old adage - "If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck..." must prevail.
A very good rockumentary about satanism and rock is "They Sold Their Souls For Rock And Roll".
Why do "religious people" believe it?
Possibly because there is a negative force throughout the media - not just R&R - just as there is a positive force as well and it all has the potential to change and mold people and society, one way or the other.
There is another side to the coin as well - as stated above.
For every genre of secular music there is a comparable style in Christian music. It gets every bit as hard, loud and dark sounding as anything in the nonchurched crowd. Just check out Demon Hunter, Paramaecium, Horde or any of the hundreds of other Christian bands that sound just like the main stream ones, except there are no offensive lyrics.

Actually, there's a very good reason why Rock is considered the devil's music.

The blues scale, which a good majority of rock is based off of, has a diminished 5th; or a tri-tone. This note in the middle ages was considered to be the sound associated with evil and summoning of Satan. It was outlawed from contemporary symphony and orchestra.

Also, the bluesman Robert Johnson was rummored to have sold his soul at a crossroads to obtain his prowess. He was an inspiration for others like Cream and Led Zeppelin. The later even slipping in a back track recording on stairway to heaven begining with "Oh, My sweet satan".

"Rock n roll is the devil's music. You couldn't convincem e otherwise." -David Bowie

Rock'n'Roll is awesome! Definitely not Satan's music, and I'm pretty religious...maybe it helps that I don't believe in Satan. :)

Of course, I draw the line at songs that just involve screaming.

Why do so many non-religious (and some religious) people think satan's not bright enough to use music to hurt people? (and not just rock n roll either)

Some rock is blatantly satanic, that of course doesn't help people's opinions. The demonic visit I had one night at the tail end of my years of listening to non-christian rock (and I didn't even listen to blatantly satanic stuff) sort of convinced me. It is a knee-jerk reaction with some Christians, granted, but that in and of itself doesn't mean it's not true.

devil can use something to decieve adult adult males; Rock and Roll is a sizable one. SO CAN GOD Christians could step out and use the presents God gave them for his glory! I even have 40 3 Led Zeppelin songs on my iPod.. greater advantageous than the different band. i don't enable that music administration me, despite if. The Christian music is the place i'm getting the achievement and peace.

Well I wouldn't classify all religious people, but yes, there are some, they believe that some rock and roll music is satanic because of certian lyrics and symbols on their music cd's and stuff like that..But not all rock is the same. There is different kinds of rock music...soft rock, classic rock, alternative rock..ect..

Religious people are going to believe what they want to believe. Music is music in my book!

I'm religious. I don't believe "Rock'n'Roll" is Satan's Music. Your question is overly simplistic and flawed. Sorry.

I don't think all rock is satan's music but a good many songs in rock as well as other genres are simply useless wastes of potential talent that is doing no more than making noise and using vulgar and disgusting lyrics to make a buck.

It's true, the recent Senate hearings by Zoroastrians For Musical Decency is a good example.
