Aside from the lemon juice, there a gell called Light'ning gel by Golden Sun. Theres also one by Le Bella. Your hair will gradually lighten with use, so the more you use, the lighter your hair will get. Theres no alcohol and it won't flake either.
I used to use it all the time and it works great. I've had friends with nearly jet black hair use it so much that their hair actually turned blonde.
I loved it because I got to choose how light my hair got, where i wanted it lighter, and all that. It's just gel, so i didn't have to use gloves or anything, but be sure to wash your hands afterwards. I didn't once and it left a layer of dried gel on my hand that looked gross.

don't do it yourself. The darker your hair, the better the chance you will just end up with orange streaks! If you need to save a little cash, try a student salon and ask for a partial highlight. A partial is plenty of highlights for anyone..you don't want your whole head done!

good luck!
