I'm having a big 50th birthday party for my husband and intend to serve ham, but to feed the number of people I'm having, it looks like I'm going to be out a chunk of change just for the ham (and unfortunately I don't have limited funds). What's your favorite ham? and why?

We like Cumberland Gap Ham. It has a very good flavor, is tender & lean. It can usually be purchased in our area for less than $2.00/lb and have bought it for $.99/lb. You might talk to your grocery store manager about a discount if you are buying a large amount.

I bought 2 Cooke hams, we had 1 about a month ago and it was good and I baked the other today and it wasn't worth heating up the oven for it. I shaved off the excessed fat but not all of it and sliced diamond shapes across the top about a 1/4 of an inch deep, then rubbed in brown sugar covering the hole ham and then on top of the brown sugar I put pineapple with some juice and then covered it and put it in the fridge, I started baking it the next day, what a disappointment and all that work for nothing. When I carved it I couldn't find a good slice for all the veins and fat, I tried carving in other places getting the same results, so I gave most of it to our dog he liked it but he'll eat anything, but for me it was thee worst ham we've ever had, simply awful! I'll think twice before buying Cooke's again!

I buy inexpensive Cooks ham for as little as 99 cents a pound. I use brown sugar and pineapple juice (from a can of chunck pineapple) to make a paste which I rub on the entire surfaceI then bake it with the fattest side up at low temperature 300 degrees until the internal temp is 170. I then pour the pineapple chunks on top of the ham. I use a can of pineapple rings to decorate the platter. I then drink the juice from the can as my reward for doing such a great job. The ham always taste excellent and is always a big hit at gatherings. Sometimes I make two hams at the same time.

A dual band VHF/UHF portable radio would be a good place to start. These are the most common bands that hams use. Most ham radios use repeater systems, so a portable will work fine an d should be within your budget. Kenwood is a good brand.

Personally, I love the Costco spiral sliced hams. They are every bit as good as Honey Baked. I also love Cure 81 which you can buy at the grocery store and have the butcher slice up for you. Good luck!
