For now, you can try a salt-water rinse. That should help with the swelling. Maybe pick up a "sulcabrush" - it is a single-tufted brush designed especially to clean and stimulate along the gumline. Also make sure that you are flossing EVERY DAY, in addition to your regular brushing routine. It may take a day or two for the swelling to go down, but it will be worth it in the long run. If you take care of your teeth and gums, especially by flossing regularly, your next dental cleaning will go SOOOO much easier because there won't be as much tartar to scrape off. Plus you will decrease your risk of gum disease and bone loss. Brushing and rinsing alone will not prevent it. You need to remove plaque below the gumline before it calcifies.

Sounds painful. I hope they get better soon. I've had this happen to me a couple of times before, too. They usually get better after a day or two. If they're still swollen in a few days, you might want to go back to the dentist, and maybe they can give you something for it. There is also the outside chance that the assistant that scraped your teeth didn't know what he or she was doing, and ended up doing more harm than good cleaning your teeth. This happens sometimes, especially when they get someone new. I hope you feel better soon.

Wow, you're gums shouldn't be that irritated. You might want to get another hygenist next time. It it hurts, take an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen. Keep an eye on those puppies though. If they look redder or hurt even more, you could have an infection, which is not something you want to overlook. Did the dentist have a look at your gums afterwards. If there was an infection, at that time, he should have recognized it. *Sheesh*, hope they're better tomorrow.

I'm no dentist, so you may get much better answers lol, but my guess would be to figure out what exactly caused them (think about what you've been eating and doing) Then remove that factor unless of course it's from brushing your teeth or flossing. Then you just need to do it more frequently.

Rinse your mouth with a salt water solution. Floss regularly and massage your gums to toughen them up. If the pain and swelling continue, go back to the dentist.

Drink lots of cold water, and take a couple of pain killers. Be sure to brush your teeth and gums every night and morning.

She had to do that to remove hardened plaque (calculus) The inflammation will reduce in a matter of hours. Drink cold water to calm any pain ... they will reduce when you wake up tomorrow or later tonight).... only take something that will soothe your pain ... this is so very temporary. keep up with your dentist! :)
