i have a 9 year old beagle whos VERY sweet, fat, and loving. he would NEVER hurt anyone! then, i got a dalmatian puppy. puppies will be active, i know that, but my dal always wants to play when my beagle walks in the room. my dal starts play bitting and jumping on my beagle. my beagle is now limping and i have to seperate the house. my beagle seems very depressed now because i spend so much time with the puppy and not with him, so when i'm running around and playin with the puppy and the puppy jumps up on me, my beagle thinks i'm in danger and starts to try to protect me when i'm not in any danger. i guess my beagle thinks my dals just a bundle of trouble while my dal thinks my beagle is just another dog to fight with. what should i do to make them get along?

Put a soft harness on the puppy and keep him on a long leash when he and Beagle are in the same room..When he attempts to bother the beagle, give him a reprimand and tug him back with the leash..Keep it up until he learns to leave the beagle alone.
Do the same thing you would do if he was trespassing, say..on the table top or grabbing the upholstery or such..the beagle is off limits..He will learn with consistency..

Your Beagle is behaving naturally. He's basically like an old retired guy who has a toddler jumping on him & biting him - that would be pretty annoying to you too! LOL
I would invest in a baby gate & let them be on either side for now. They will be able to see each other, but the Beagle doesn't have to be jumped on since he really doesn't particularly enjoy it. Can you blame him? :)
The Beagle will get used to seeing & smelling the puppy & just having him around.
The puppy will also get used to your older dog & eventually, he won't want to jump on him so much cuz he won't be quite so novel.
You can let them be in the same room - supervised of course! Do this for ten minutes sessions, a couple of times a day. Always put them on separate sides of the gate afterward, so the Beagle can recuperate.
Train your puppy to settle down a bit so that he isn't so annoying. Training him to "sit" is a good start - although he certainly won't do it for long!
When they are together, you can give them each a Nylabone, so that they will each be occupied & hopefully not annoying each other. Again - supervise them closely! If puppy tries to get the older dog's bone - look out! You should also have both of them neutered. This will stop some of the fighting.
Try to have patience & make sure each of them have their own space. That's why the baby gate works so nicely - they can both see each other & see you, so they both feel secure & loved.
Switch sides of the baby gate too, so that they each spend equal time with you.
They will eventually get used to one another.

get them fixed. and also puppies are just like that. they are bundles of energy. have someone come over, to hold your beagle when the dal start to jump on you. once the dal has been on you for like 3 minutes, get up and walk over to the beagle and reward him for not "saving you." he will soon get used to the dal jump on you and you actually staying alive. that will help the beagle get used to the dal. Also do that the opposite way around. Hold the dal. and let the beagle play around. Just make sure that you give both dogs the same amount of attention. :)

you beagle is jealous and depressed and feels abandon. and well he should, his domain has been invaded by a younger and bothersome little **** that wont leave him alone. your beagle is too old and low energy to put up with a pup, this was a bad choice on your part. and now you need to step up with making sure your old beagle feels loved, apprciated and protected from the hurtful little intruder. i am sure the pup is wonderful, but pups are bitey, nippy, clumsy and aln older dog can easily be hurt by all the roughness. qaurintine the pup , confine him to a smaller area , somewhere your beagle is not particularly fond of going, and let the beagle have the run, also feed the beagle first, give him his treats first, and make sure he still feels like number 1.
I really hate to hear when people get a new pup when they have an elderly dog, your just asking for trouble. to your beagle it seems like he is being replaced. love him lots, and make sure he feels special. he may or may not ever warm to the pup, but you stand a better chance of intergration if he feels like he is still the number one dog. you might want to google search on dogs, and the "pack mentality" dogs do not think like humans, they are pack animals witha pecking order.

my mom and dad had this problem with two dogs and a cat! Dad got a water gun and just had at 'em! The cat will imediately stop and run. The dogs stopped fighting too. They eventually decided that it was great fun and tried to drink the water.

Seperate them for a very long time, so they can't see each other. Don't play with one if the other can see you. Try and play with them equally. After about a month, see if they will cooperate with each other.
