Look for Cook's sparkling wine. It's in the aisle right next to the Andre. (Don't buy Andre). Cook's is only about $4-$5 a bottle, and when I served it at a wedding everyone swore I'd bought $30 a bottle champagne.. Hee, little did they know!

Cooks is pretty good, and very affordable - about $8 a bottle up here, so I'm sure you could find it cheaper where you live.

I prefer champagne over wine, but that's a personal preference.

It's all sparkling wine unless it comes from the Champagne region of France..
I like Frexinet (sp?)

Black bottle called Freixinet Champagne Wine (spelling). It's inexpensive and enjoyable. Also Turning Leaf Pinot Grigio (white wine) is great.

"Cheap" will probably put you towards a Sparkling Wine. While Andre's, Cooks, Tott's, and several other are cheap and will get the job done, they don't taste very good.

For my under $20, I get Mirabelle from Schramsberg. It's non-vintage, but oh so yummy. I think my local Trader Joe's sells it for around $18. http://www.bevmo.com/productinfo.asp?sku=00000004470&Dn=166+168&Nr=Store%3A99&Ntt=mirabelle&N=168+0&Nty=1&D=mirabelle&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=All

As far as which is better, sparkling or wine, it really depends on my mood and what I'm eating. Sometimes I love to sit and sip wine, other times I like to sit and sip bubbly. It's all good. : )

It depends on what you mean by "better". Champagne is fizzy and that tends to give people headaches faster. It can also be pretty rough if you're just going to "down" it and not enjoy it. I really enjoy Martini & Rossi Asti...its sweeter that a Brut and tastes great.
