Egads... a reputable breeder cannot sell their puppies for $400, and would NOT sell a pup to a pet store!!! A reputable breeder shows their dogs to prove their quality, and does the genetic health tests on the parents before breeding -- this costs a LOT of money. The costs have to be passed on to the price of the puppies --- or else producing good, healthy dogs would be left up to only the wealthy in search of a hobby. A reputable breeder is also responsible for their puppies for it's lifetime and makes sure the breed suits the new owner; that's why they would never sell to a pet shop --- they have no control over who buys the puppy or where it ends up (euthanized in a shelter somewhere?).

A vet cannot check your new puppy for genetic problems; some of them don't show up until the animal is 2 years old or better, and some require a specialist to diagnose. That's why it is the *parent* dogs that are screened. Make sure the breeder has the health certificates for the problems affiliated with your breed: OFA x-rays on hips and elbows, OFA cardiac exam, CERF eye exam, etc. Investigate your breed before you buy; start with your breed's parent club, found through the akc website at www.akc.org. So, generally speaking, a dog from a good breeder will run in the neighborhood of $1200-1500; more if C-sections are common in your breed.

BTW, it costs a breeder the same amount to raise a show quality puppy as it does a pet quality puppy; the parent dogs have the same tests done. If no show homes are available, many a "show quality" puppy has gone to a pet home, and many breeders charge no difference in price.

Oh gosh - there aren't many Border Terriers around, I would expect to pay well over a thousand for a nice one. By "nice" one, I mean one who didn't come from a backyard breeder or a puppy mill. You must go to the Border Terrier Club of America website. They can provide you with a listing of reputable breeders. http://clubs.akc.org/btcoa/
I have Collies, and believe me, they aren't a popular breed (too much grooming.) And even my Collies start out at over $1,000 for puppies and there are plenty of Collies around.
So plan to spend quite a bit for your new little friend.

I've bred quality Border Terriers since the mid 70s. If you find one at $300-$350 .... it's NOT a purebred BT! Borders run about $1500.00up. AKC registered and with a written health guarantee.... this would be on a spay/neuter agreement. The Border Terrier is not a common breed.... the more common breeds have lower price tags simply because they flood the market.

"Pet quality" BT's can range from roughly the $400 range and up. By "pet quality", I mean that these are dogs from breeders that don't quite make the grade as show dogs for various reasons...symmetry, coat color/texture, conformation, etc. Many of these pups are sold to pet stores. If you buy such a dog, immediately take it to your vet and have it thoroughly checked for any physical or other congenital defects, and be sure that the seller backs his animals with some sort of guarantee against health defects.

Show quality AKC certified dogs are $1200-$1500 and up, depending on the dam and sire (parents). If Mom and Dad were champions, the cost goes up. Hope this info helped.

It depends on where you live. I would give and estimate roughly, well, vaccinations cost about $300-$350. Worming costs about $100, so I would say roughly $300-$500. If you don't mind about it being mixed, you could go to the animal shelter, for they come with shots, and are wormed, and are cheaper. Plus, you save a life by adopting.

Edited! I misread and gave my estimate for Border collie, instead of Border Terrier! Sorry 'bout that.

Anyway, if you live in UK, you will find them less expensive than in USA or Canada. They do run about $1,000-1500..

There are several nice ones here, just put in your own zip code> http://www.flayme.com/troll/i
