It worked well in Ireland as well, I am from Dublin and it has done such a good difference. It is a healthier atmophere esp in restaurants and pubs where there is no-one blowing smoke into your face! Everyone that wants to smoke has to go outside, and it puts some people off when it is raining etc. So more people will cut down on the amount they smoke. I couldn't imagine Ireland with out it, if they took it back I would probably move country! ;o)

Here in Ontario Canada we have a total ban since 2002, restaurants, bars, private clubs, legion halls. Plus the workplace, now in the cold of a Canadian winter the one's who smoke are forced to trudge outside, the biggest thing is the y have not made it a mandatory issue in cars or home were children live, but ask them to please take it outside.
I grew up with a smoker, never took up the habit myself, aminly because my mother would have rode me like a dime store pony if I did, plus I grew up in the 1970's and had no real cash to buy tobacco products.

I think a smoking ban is a good thing. Most of the restaurants in my city are smoke free and, to me, they are all that much more enjoyable. It will take a while for the smokers to get used to the idea. They still are free to pollute their bodies, but they can no longer pollute mine.

It is working really well in Ireland since it came in....even though there was huge opposition beforehand!
But publican's beware...please set up 'outside smoke rooms' and also extra ashtrays/bins outside your premises, as most smokers seem to take liberties and flick their cigarette butts on to the pavements outside the premises.

i'm 100% over the moon about it i cant bear to be in smoking pubs or any enclosed space really. it will be however very interesting to see how it changes the dynamics of nightlife and people move out onto the street especially in summer. in winter months it will hopefully encourage people to smoke less but then what will we have? public areas fulll of moaning stressed peopel and possibly more fights? yea i know i'm exaggerating but you never know!! I CANT WAIT!!! no more smoke in my face in my food in my eyes and hair and clothes!!!!

We thought it would be the end of the world in Ireland when they banned smoking but the sky did not fall in. It will be difficult at first but there will be a cultural change and in ten years you will never miss it.

"I Agree , and I'm a smoker, But smelling smoke in clubs,pubs
and in restaurants and cafe's is terrible. It's a good move by the government and should be respected by all."

went to southern Ireland smoking ban there it was great no dogging burning fags that people dangle by their sides as they walk to avoid getting burned no second hand smoke while eating absolutely great
went to Germany where they smoke more than we do in the UK they have no manners they deliberately blow the smoke all over your meal and you there was no NO SMOKING areas in the restaurants
I've never smoked but my mum used to and my kid brother does when he visits us he stinks the house out with his cigarette smoke I wish I could ban him smoking in my house but he won't listen when you ask him not too smoke
