I´m from Mexico and I have a friend who is from India, and when he talks with me, he says "hi mam"....

Mam is commonly mentioned to all ladies, is totally respectful and it is very common to hear in US.

When I address to any woman which I don't know, I always use Mam.

mam means-madam in english,i think your friend is using mam instead of ms or mrs.

it is the formal way of addressing you, as if a store clerk would say to you after you pay for your groceries "thank you, ma'am". Normally it is not used between friends.
