it comes from an old bartender superstition that if you serve your guest 1 or 3 olives it is a way of wishing them good luck and if you serve 2 it's to be considered bad luck or wishing harm to your guest. Sounds crazy i know but it does make sense.

There are no set number of olives in a martini~ The olive was first added as a savory component to the huge juniper flavor of gin. Many bartender pals of mine tell me different bar owners like to use 3 olives to offset the alcohol. the less they use the cheaper the drink costs the bar. In other places who are famous for their olives (think blue cheese stuffed) they tend to use more. The same can be said for the cocktail onion, a personal fave~

Many bars use three olives. There is no set number. Places use three because of displacement. The more solid objects in the glass the less liquid volume is needed. A bottle of olives costs much less than a bottle of gin. Also, image, it looks better when three olives take up the whole stick and drink. Flavour is also effected but that's minor.

I never heard of a set number but when I make my own martinis, I put in either 1 or 3. Two just seems wrong but I have no reason why.

do not understand the muse however the olive is there for flavor. in case you order a grimy martini, they upload extra of the olive juice to the vodka. Vodka or gin martini is frequently served w/2 olives. It does flavor very stable. in case you have not had one, order one w/ stable high quality vodka like Belvedere. delight in!

I think you should put however many olives you like in your martini. In my case, that would be none :-)
