I think religion should be both tolerated and kept under control. Henry the XIII King of England nationalized the Church. The Queen is today the head of the Church of England.
The Chinese Government have taken control of the Roman Catholic Church because The Pope teaches against contraception and abortion which contradicts the policy of the government of an overpopulated country. The Pope is also anti socialist.
If religion gained the upper hand it would result in wars.
Oliver Cromwell was a christian dictator who ruled England for a few years. He was so bad that after his death they brought back the king.

Banning religion will not prevent the crimes you list.
In fact, more of such crimes would be committed. Not only that, but other crimes would be created, only to be broken by the indomitable urge for people to believe in myth, legends, and deities.
Which crimes? Let's start with the freedom to assemble. Then there is freedom of expression, freedom of choice, freedom of privacy, freedom of travel, etc. ... Oh, and the freedom to do anything else except enforce the law.
Communism has tried and failed to abolish religion and its practice. Its failure is fundamentally due to the fact that people not only think, but feel. It is feelings that lead people to enjoy the benefits of religion.
I am an Atheist. This does not imply that I am a communist, or believe in the utopia of a society free from religion and the negative hallmarks of its persistent existence, or that I find absolutely no benefit from living among people who not only believe by feeling, but take action by their passions. This is not entirely unhealthy.
Education, diplomatic relationships and a couple of thousands of years will see religion slip away from society.

What's religion got to do with those things? it's the people not religion. Men and women are the wicked ones...not religion itself. Some power hungry individuals who use religion in the name of whatever they're doing. Give me a brake. You could apply rapes, killings, abuses, wars even terrorism to anything. We could even say should we ban atheist? people who have no fear of hell for those things!!!!! gee, let me think about this........it's a no brain-er......NOT, that's the problem is every atheist that's tried to take God out of our country....maybe that's the problem, if we had more GOD FEARING people then maybe we wouldn't have half the problems. Then again,,,,gee maybe we should blame it on Satanist or black, or I know the illegal immigrants yeah that's it....then again, maybe it's just plain and simple ignorance....and intolerance.....give me a break!!!!!

Absolutely. All the bad things in the world are caused by religion and those stupid religious people trying to live good lives. If people didn't have their dumb morals, to help them know right from wrong, all this terrible stuff would never happen. WHOA! You are an absolute genius!
I mean, really! I'm sure nobody would have any problem at all if you told them they weren't allowed to worship their gods anymore. I think the world would be totally chill with that idea.
So props to you, Dreamer. You are one smart chick.

1.) You have no authority to "ban" religion. No one has that authority. It is my right as a human being and NO ONE can excercise any kind of control over that right.
2.) Rapes, Killings, Abuses, even terrorism - those things are as common in the secular world, if not common. So banning religion wouldn't get rid of these things.

I don't think that banning religion would eradicate all of the crimes you mentioned. Those people who are inclined to behave in those ways would likely do so in the absencs of religion as well.
People have to believe in something. It's a biological imperative. Another is that people tend to congregate with people of like beliefs. Get enough of these people together and they will form a movement of some sort, be it religious, political or social. Someone from among the congregation will rise to lead the congregation. That person will then have power. If we remember what Lord Acton said about power, we'll realize that people, given power, will abuse it. The more they are given, the greater the abuse.
It is not religion that is the problem, it's us.

No. The only reason some people DON'T steal and kill people is because they think their Bible or list or God tells them not to.
Of course, if they actually READ the Bible, they'd discover that God repeatedly COMMANDS his followers to hurt and kill people. Check out Ezekiel 9:6, Isaiah 13:16, Deuteronomy 13:15, Leviticus 20:9, Exodus 32:27, Deut 21:10-12, Joshua 7:15, and Hosea 13:16.

We Americans cannot use police power of government and ban the first Ammendment. If we ban religion, then we ban media, freedom of speech. That ban will mean no yahoo answers.
Those are basic human rights.
God bless!!!!

although i my self am an atheist, religion most definitly should not be banned. it may cause wars and terrorism, but over the vast majority of the world, how many of 7 billion are actually dying? religion, whatever religion, induces a state of tranquility when among others of the faith. this is crucial to the survival of humanity physically and mentally. otherwise we (humans) would be nothing more than a bunch of superstitious apew with i.q.'s averaging near 100.
