It looks like a small parrot or a big parakeet, it has a white/gray body, yellow head, and a crest of yellow feathers. Can anyone help identifying this bird?

Can you provide a link to a site with care information please.

My mother has left it roaming free around the house, he can't fly because his wings were recently clipped (I realise it must have been recently because he tries to fly and sinks right to the floor).

She has bought a really small cage with has 2 perches, but not room for him to move around. I don't want to lock him in there, but I won't be allowed to close the doors or the window.

is ok for him to sleep perched in his cage, or should I make him some kind birdhouse or could I let him sleep where he pleases? would light and noises disturb him much?

thank you very much for your answer!!!!

Damn, the cage is only 21cm wide, I could not convince my mother that he needs a bigger one, she wants to let him around the house all the time, I think he will surely run away.

Your bird is a sexually mature male Cockatiel.

Here is a page on care: http://www.cockatiel.org/tips/

Please specificly see the information on cage size (under the cages link) and the toy section. Also see the "Cockatiel Care Kits" link.

You should not let him sleep where he pleases, he needs to be safe in his cage at night and when no one is around to watch him. He does not need a birdhouse, just a good perch and a bird cage cover (an old sheet will do) to protect him from drafts. Noise and light will disturb any bird during its sleeping hours, but he will adjust to the household hours and typically sleep when you do. He might chirp or sing in the morning and evening when the sun comes up or goes down. This is their way of being social.

Does the bird look like the one at the link below? Also for a cage you need to provide it with a cage that it can live in comfortably. Even if he has free run of the house there are going to be times when you cant allow it to be running around and it will need to be in its cage.

This cockatiel needs a bigger cage. Please take her to http://www.cockatiels.org/ and go to the reading room. There are great care tips about your new bird there.

It is fun to let your cockatiel run around, but they do need to be caged for saftey. They need toys, a proper diet, and human interaction.
