What I heard is their not deleting it just getting rid of staff so cloth will only be available in precut, prepackaged pieces. If that doesn't lose them business I don't know what will. Who wants to buy a package of cloth that doesn't have enough or has too much for yopur project? I know a lot of crafters and sewers who are none too happy with Walmart right now and old Wally must be rolling in his grave over this lack of concern for the customers.

Another truly amazing post. I really don't believe peoples logic. People protest Wal-Mart’s expansion, criticize their products, but when they decide to discontinue something or make changes to better the store even more people climb out of the woodwork to protest. #1 Wal-Mart has done their homework. They don't just decide things on a whim. Companies sell products for profit. Yes they are providing you with something you "want" (yes fabric is a want not a need), but they wouldn't be providing the service if they are not making money. #2 There is a business saying that goes "just because there are cars in the parking lot doesn't mean your making money". The fabric dept may look busy but that doesn't mean they are taking in the profit. #3 Wal-Mart does take loses on some products. I can tell you first hand that one of the posters above does not know what he is talking about when he says they make 47% profit over cost. They take losses on many good but make up for it with others. Also Wal-Mart's philosophy is to sell quantity at low cost. Instead of marking up like other retailers, Wal-Mart lowers the price and takes a smaller profit but in return sells more. #4 Petitions and writing to the company is not going to solve anything. Wal-Mart has done their research and looked at the data. Fabrics and Crafts is a large dept and doesn't attract many shoppers, and doesn't give much to profit. #5 Maybe they will be expanding their selections of home fashions so you can find something already made cheaper than making it yourself. Oh and as a PS...Don’t get me started on eliminating layaway. What a waste it was to even have in the first place. Most stores had 70% or more in returns and cancellations. What a waste of space and employee power. Here is an idea....save up the money and then go shopping. Wow what a concept.

Man... that really sucks. My daughter and I have bought alot of stuff from there for doing crafts, gettings some fabrics for costumes, and even her wanting to design clothes. Well... I guess we'll be going to Joanne's instead.
Besides, I cant stand WalMart anyways. It seems like every time I go to one its totally gross. Like spilled sodas, baskets have a broken or bad wheel.... Eh, I go to Target. Prices are exactly the same, and hell... its a cleaner store and you the stuff there seems to be more hip.

you know as our competitor ...walmart is loosing alot of other departments just cause theirs no demand for them. Their loosing money with the layaway so they did away with that and started mimicing us with the walmart credit card, and then they started copying us again with their uniforms...so everyday walmart is trying to keep up with target. I cant blame them for getting rid of the fabric department, it doesnt bring in any profit, especially when most people would go to hobby lobby or micheals craft stores to get fabrics. Of course walmart will still be around because they have gotten into peoples heads that their the lowest-when their really not anymore- but they do indeed offer a wide selection of products. Thats why they will continue to thrive. However i have to say this, target is getting bigger and badder everyday, as our other big department stores, so when theirs a demand or a need their will be a company to fill the demands and need. But with no demand or need for an item, those items will become harder to find. Sewing is becoming a thing of the past, espeically when its almost cheaper to buy something then to make it. So really...when you think about it, can you really blame them?

i have reconsidered for so many reasons but unless we boycott big corp. nationally we have the problem of that stuff being the cheapest And easiest to acsess. every thing is all in one place how can you not shop there. wallmart started out as a small business but they cut out the stuff they need the least. i know many people who quilt and i would buy them gifts there but usually at a nicer fabric shop, the fact is if you got the money don't shop there if not you kinda have to, its not a matter of choice for me anyways.

Omg when is this going to happen? is it just the fabric dept. or the other stuff too? that's part of the main reason I go there., some stuff is cheaper than the specialty stores like Michaels etc.

fwiw, profitability of the fabric dept is why they are getting out of it.
I'd say good for the small town fabric stores.
