I think if its for christmas this year you have a long time to wait. Unless its just a normal cake with a christmas theme

You can bake it now, once baked, keep wrapped in greaseproof paper and foil in an airtight container. Before wrapping, prick with a skewer and pour brandy. Do this once a month ensuring you wrap the cake well afterwards. Middle of December add marzipan and icing. Wrap up again in greaseproof paper and foil. Christmas day... enjoy a rich mature cake. My birthday is on the 30th of dec. My mother always made me my own cake of the rich christmas variety in this way. I was still enjoying it in the middle of the following year. (I kept it well wrapped) She died 2 years ago, I still have 2 of her christmas puddings to be steamed and enjoyed, stored in a cool and dark cupboard to enjoy this year!

October or November is plenty of time to make your christmas cake. If you are making it any earlier I would advise you to make sure that you have some liquid glucose and also glycerine in the batter to prolong it's shelf life.
Christmas puddings long ago were made in March and left to hang wrapped in their muslin cloths.
