Of course you can put the litter tray in the toilet...I can't think of a better place to put it! Not hygienic? That's doesn't make sense to me! lol.
I've got six cats...now that is a lot of mess! The loo is definitely the best place.

I have placed the litter tray in the kitchen, bedroom and living room. I prefer the bathroom because I can flip on the exhaust
fan. Soiled litter does create germs and should not be handle
by women who are pregnant. The better brand kitty litters
is safe for pets and people. If you are concerned about
hygiene the wear disposable gloves and a mask when you clean
the tray. Clean it everyday if you want. Put some carpet runner
beneath the tray to catch the litter that is "thrown" outside the
tray. Just vacuum once every 2-3 days. Cat litter can not be flushed, however; it must be placed in a trash bag and put in the
trash can.

Trust me the toilet is fine if it is big enough just make sure you are diligent and disinfect the area a t least once a week.
I have always put the litter tray in the laundry because it is tiled as well. I would have put it in the toilet if the area had been big enough. Just keep it clean every day and get rid of pooh straight away and you want have a problem no matter where you put it.

I don't see why you can't keep the litter tray in the bathroom, I always did. Perhaps she meant you shouldn't flush the kitty litter in the toilet? (Some brands claim to be flushable, but most toilets aren't really capable of handling this.)
As long as you clean the litter box regularly and wash your hand thoroughly after doing so, you should be fine. If you're pregnant or have an autoimmune disorder, you should have someone else empty the tray to avoid any chance of toxioplamosis.

You need to keep the litter tray or box away from the cat's food, this will upset them, and they may start to spray urine on your furniture to tell you that they don't like it. The litter box in the bathroom will get litter on the floor, and with damp feet from the shower will cause a mess on your feet, not to mention the germs. If you can find a corner that is isolated, perhaps behind a screen, buy a large floor mat to contain the litter from getting in your house carpet. The cat will feel like he has a private area to do his business in, your carpet will be safe, and your feet germ free.

We always used to put the litter in the bathroom. There was no problems on either part. If you keep the litter and the bathroom clean I am sure you will be fine. If you seriously do not wish to keep it there then get a small rubber mat. Maybe the kind that are used for boots in rainy season and put the litter on top of that. or get an enclosed box so that the litter does not go flying.

I've never heard that before!! Not hygienic for who? You or the cats?!
I've got eight cats and their trays are in the bathroom. Admittedly, they only use the tray at night-time, but they don't like to poo in public, whatever the time of day!!!
I think as long as you keep it clean and disinfected, and use a decent cat litter (I use CatSan - never any smells!) then the bathroom is probably the most hygienic place for it!!
Let us know if you find out differently!

when i was training my cat, i placed her tray on the side of the room to her bed. after she got used to this, i moved it outside the room, then every few days closer to the cat flap. if you're worried about the carpet, put down plenty of newspaper, or get a plastic sheet, or even better, use both. it protects the carpet efficiently. obviously, there will be accidents, but this is only to be expected in a new house, especially in a young kitten. this does work, i assure you, especially if you reinforce the good behaviour with treats, and either ignore or punish lightly the bad behaviour. if you want more information on this reinforcement, look up Pavlov, and his dog experiment.

its not like you spend a great deal of time in the bathroom, i would hope, and as long as you keep everything clean you're not going to have a hygiene problem. ANd putting a litter box on carpet is nasty and that will not be hygenic at all.

we put our litter tray in our bathroom but then again, we dont have carpet in there. however, if u dont have anywhere else to put it, you could always buy a mat to go around it or even use an old car floor mat and put it underneath--just as long as the mat is about 3-7 inches bigger than your litter tray, you should be fine and not get litter anywhere on your carpet.
