You are so accurate on this observation. I have never realized why a smoker would choose to throw a lit cigarette out the window of a car and into my face or into my car, instead of into the ashtray that they have right on the dash.
The whole idea of pollution is to try to monitor yourself enough to make a difference in the world. If we pick up after ourselves, we can clean the community! And we certainly have in the past 25 years!!!
I think that the reason people hap-hazardly toss garbage out the window, namely lit cigarettes, is that they don't care enough about making a positive difference in the world. If they cared about making a difference, would they keep smoking? If they cared about being positive, would they still inhale smoke into their lungs and retain that awful hacking cough that they walk around with everyday? If they don't care about themselves, how are they going to be inspired to give a damn about anyone else?

These smokers are providing a valuable service to the nation and to the environment.
As the gentleman above mentioned, cigarettes are bio-degradable. What he failed to mention is that they produce Nitrogen as the degrade. If placed in an ashtray and thrown away, this nitrogen is waisted, ewhen thrown into a grassy area, it feeds plants. Nitrogen is necessary for leaf developement, photosyntheseis, and the conversion of CO2 into Oxygen, thus fighting global warming.
Smokers also help the country in its war effort by throwing cigarettes into grass. The military will take recruits on "missions" to pick up cigarette buts out of grassy areas. This helps train them to pick out unatural objects against a green background. (seriously) Because cigarettes tend to get dirty and covered in brown, it further helps them pick out camaflauged unnatural objects in a environment of similar color to the camaflauge. This is a training which is hard to duplicate with anything but a cigarette but. (also serious)
If you are worried about possible fiars, don't be. Healthy plants do not burn at the temperatures a cigarette ember burns at. They must be dry and ill. If the cigarette but ignites them, they were so heavely water deprived they most likely would have died anyway. The fire will turn them into ash, which is a wonderful fertilizer, much quicker than the plant would have rotted in a dry environment after their natural death. This makes the nutrients in the plants available quicker for regrowth of healthy flora when water conditions return to optimal.
You should thank these smokers.

I'm a 40 year smoker and I couldn't agree with you more. When I was in the military we learned to "field strip" a cigarette. That meant you got it out by flicking or tapping it on the bottom of your shoe or if outside use the ground. you tear the butt open and what's left can blow to the wind and you put the filter in your pocket. We'd have 100 people out there all of them smoking and not a butt in sight.

Most smokers are selfish, inconsiderate pricks. Here in NZ they've just banned smoking in pubs and restaurants, not before time. The death toll from passive smoking was about 300 a year. That's more than from drunk driving. The total road toll here is about 450 a year. Most passive smoking victims are workers in bars and restaurants.

I agree - I hate it very much. I picked up a butt a woman flicked out of her car in a parking lot one day and threw it back in her open window. OH let me tell you there was an argument! I doubt she changed her ways but I hope she did.
You can't pull up to a stop sign without seeing the butts all over the ground.

Cigarettes are actually biodegradable. If you bury an entire ashtray of butts in a hole 3 inches deep and then dig up the hole a month later, all of the butts will be gone. leave a butt in a cup of water and within 2 days it will be a pile of mush in the bottom of the cup.
The burning end of a cigarette consists of tobacco and paper while the filter consists of cellulose acetate fibers that are as thin as several pieces of thread. Once the outer layer of paper disintegrates, the cellulose acetate fibers separate and fall apart.

It's not all smokers who do this, just rude people who happen to be smokers. I wish that other smokers wouldn't do this becuase it makes all of us look bad (or worse I should say.)

Smokers tend to feel that they are the only people that matter and everyone should be forced to smell their habits.
