my computer is being stupid and it almost scared me. it has chnaged the desktop on me twice and i nearly thought i was missing some files. it is slower and it's like it has gone back to it microsoft ways of operating and not my set options. is there a chance of a virus that norton has not caught? what is going on with my computer?

This is not a virus.
You have spyware, adware, malware or some sort of trojan installed itself on your system. This is a classic symptom.
Get your self a good anti-spyware program and run it through your computer. Best to do it in 'safe mode'. Have a read of my site.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Your problem is you're running Norton. Get rid of Norton, download a reputable antivirus program (i.e. AVG grisoft.com) and you should be just fine. But be sure and uninstall Norton, though.

Could this be as simple as performing routine maintenance on the computer such as defrag, deleting internet files,cookies,etc??

It could be a virus or there is something wrong with your software.

ummm... more than likely u have a virus. you should get that checked
