Since I focus on air, two things come immediately to mind.

Global Warming - pending weather and physicals disasters predicted, resulting in flooding, drought and redistribution of disease.

Ozone Depletion (Ozone holes) - result in dangerous radiation striking the earth's surface.

One other thing you can do is find an online environmental science newsletter to subscribe to, and keep abreast of issues. One such as http://www.stuffintheair.com/ArticleEnvironmentalScience.html.

Good luck in your quest.

for starters we git our water from fresh water and only a small part of that fresh water can be used for drinking there is the destruction of habitat on a local level and it all adds up so people have bad habits they use resources but dont put it back in they fill the landfill with biodegaradeables and waste good energy that could have been used again many yards are manicured to not share the earth with the animals the people seem to be mad at something cause they poison everything arround them were im at 97% of the wetlands are gone and 90% of the fish are gone thru out the world many local laws that are old and are outdated keep us dependant on forgien sources of energy which they dont like us or are not so friendly we hold on to dirty methods of energy creation when alot of that is wasted it takes lots of big gass guzzlers to move energy and photovoltaics and wind generation could be used schools have a golf course mentality there could be green spaces and wetlands but in stead like the library and trails to walk on they spray stuff that is not benifical to the earth right next to the water if i work hard enough i can git a semi full of recycleables out of the environmen how do you think that effects your drinking water when people use the tributarys as a place to throw there refuge some groups like adopt a road have a good idea put i know of no large areas they set aside to part out the stuff they find into individual dumpsters to recycle or store stuff for future use each time i type and everysecond im on here its more harm to the environment when you consider changing some of your old ways to trade them in for new ones that are more earth friendly or green some people just dont seem to care and i wanna know that im making a difference do you know how much one can save in the amount of energy or how many times a bottle can go arround whats the difference between a screw in type bulb verses a incandesent bulb do you know that other towns use the same water we just used and what you do up stream can effect those downstream do you want to make an impact by planting trees and haveing a biological buffer filtration strip to make an impact on global warming what do you think the difference is between a yard that has habitat verses a yard that is leveled which one do you think is more inviteing to animals and insects do you think grass makes great habitat which one gives off more oxygen and provides privacy filters out noise pollution air pollution and makes less violent neiborhoods ya be a passenger in a car and look out the window before a big trip and you will notice trash from were you started and alll the way to were you git to do you think that is acceptable many communitys make very little effort to recycle and that hurts me its not good when you dont have a good place to swim cause its just to hazardous but ive been picking up the environment and i make a difference i plant trees and wildflowers and make bird houses and i can help save the earth so are you with me or will you stay a big polluter did you catch on to the environment collapseing in on people from the hurricane katrina did you catch on to the power outage or are you gonna ignore downed power lines and keep on with not careing or not try at least alittle to git informed

Air pollution is a big culprit, contributing to all sorts of respiratory problems including lung cancer, asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Google "Donora Smog" for a really startling example of the effects of air pollution on health.
