There are a variety to things that can cause hematochezia and melena (bloody stool) and hematemesis (bloody vomit). It may be an infectious cause, such as Parvo. This is bad disease but can be treated with supportive care. It may also be hemorraghic gastroenteritis (HGE). We aren't really sure what causes it, but the good news is that that we are very effective at treating it.
Your dog may have ingested something. Rat poison would be at the top of the list. If you have any rat poison in the house, take it to your vet right away so that they can determine what type it is. The most common type interferes with your body's ability to use vitamin K, which causes the blood to be unable to clot. This is also treatable.
Your dog may have GI ulcers (and possible perforation, if it is bad). Has she been on any sort of antiinflammatories, such as Rimadyl, recently? These can have corrosive effects on the GI tract.
She may also have eaten something that is harming her GI tract. She may also have cancer, though I think that this would be lower on the list of differentials, at least for now.
Your vet will probably run bloodwork, do radiographs and perform an ultrasound to find out what might be going on. She will probably need supportive therapy, such as fluids and possible blood products, if she becomes clinical for any anemia.
I know this is really scary. I wish you and your pet the best.

I think it sounds like parvo. Hopefully thats not what it is! If your dog is a puppy its more likely. I have seen one dog survive parvo. It was a miracle. The puppy is still getting better. It has been on meds, for a month. It also could be something your dog ate! Sometimes even human table scraps can cause bloody stools. Good Luck, hope your dog gets better!

I have a rescued Dachsund who, in another life, had to eat whatever he was lucky enough to find. And due to that trauma he puts everything in his mouth. Sticks, pine cones, everything. One morning I woke up to find bloody diarrhea all over the house and he could not keep food or water down (no bloody vomiting, though). Never could figure out exactly what he got a hold of, but the vet said he probably picked up feces or urine from a raccoon or possum. Wildlife carries all kinds of germs and diseases and then poop in your yard.

After a couple of days of antibiotics and bland food, little three-legged Sparky was back out barking at the squirrels. :)

I hope your dog is fine very soon.

How old is the dog? Has the dog had all the shots? We had a dog that got parvo, she had bloody stools, but I don't remember her vomiting blood. If it continues, contact a vet IMMEDIATELY, as parvo kills very fast, I think through dehydration. We gave ours coconut water, and she lived, but that meant constant care for days.

I'm sorry I don't know - I just wanted to say I'm glad your dogs at the vets. I do get a bit sick of people coming on here saying things like 'my cat hasn't moved for three days and has blood coming out of her ears... what should I do?' Or, my friend is being sexually assaulted by her brother.... what should I do?' Vets/Police!!!!!!!!

Sorry little rant there - I do hope that your dog has a speedy recovery - I know how much you can worry for a pet.

Sorry about your dog, but don't go speculating. She is in the best possible place. The only ones who can find out what is causing this are the vets, no one on the internet can possibly diagnose the problem. If you start imagining all the things it could be, you'll worry yourself to death.
Hope she recovers soon for you

Look to other vets, ask same as asked here! I have a bad feeling, but Cancer is most probable. How old is the dog? Backyard dog? Able to get anything YOU have not given him, IE... bones, bags from neighbor trash, any thing different in behavior before it happened? Too many questions to ask!

I hope your dog is ok. Our 9 week old lab puppy had bloody/mucousy stools at the weekend and immediately took him to the emergency vet. He has giardia (not sure on spelling) He has been on antibiotics and powder on his food since then and is recovering well.

The first thing you should do is realize this is a completely ridiculous question. WHY are you sitting at the computer, waiting for someone tell you to take your dog to the doctor. If you, your dog, your cat, or anyone you know is vomiting blood and having bloody stools, Please... and I do mean PLEASE - get them medical help right away. Jeez.
