He needs to cut rich foods down or out of his diet-gravies, mushrooms, salt, coffee, soda, beer, meat,
Best things for gout:
Cherry Juice or 1/2 pound of fresh or canned unsweetened cherries. Natural cherry juice works the best, you can purchase this from your local health food store. Make sure it is the natural, unsweetened brand and if it is the concentrate variety follow the directions with proper amounts of water to dilute the juice.
The darker the better. Any dark red, blue berries will prevent and reduce inflammation of the joints and will aid with circulation which is necessary to help the uric acid crystals that builds up in the synovial joints. If cherry juice is not your flavor, try Blueberry juice - it will work the same way. Hawhtorne berry is very bitter but will increase circulation as well as aid in inflammation.

You may also want to consider a daily supplement of 400-800 iu of Vitamin E and 125-250mg of Quercetin with Bromelain, 3 (three) times a day between meals to ease the pain and help with further gout flare ups.

There is no one effective gout treatment that can be used for everyone to cure gout. Some may need medication to treat gout while others may have to change their diet and exercise habits. Eating food that has low purine levels seems to be the gout treatment that works for most people. This treatment helps to prevent uric acid from building up in the body. Other types of treatment can include herbal remedies. In order to help narrow down the type of gout treatment to use, one should first research on all the available types of treatment when a person is looking for a possible gout treatment. This will provide better knowledge on the types of treatment that will work and the ones will not. It is important to consult your doctor first before starting an herbal remedy if one is on any form of medication.

Gout treatment usually involves more than just taking medication. The treatment will by and large require one to make changes to their lifestyle. These changes include changing one’s diet and exercising more regularly. There is no restriction to the type of exercise one prefers to engage in. However it is important to bear in mind that when one should avoid exercising when having a gout attack. This is to prevent escalating the pain in the joints. Rest and wait till the pain gone away before continuing with the gout treatment. In most cases, people will experience less of such pain attacks of gout once they changed their eating and other habits.

as far as I understand there is no cure but there are studies people participate in for better meds for them. I have been told that caffine and salt really add to the discomfort of gout. I feel for your dad I heard gout is very painful.
