This is how I make it:
In a pretty glass dish, layer each of the following, spreading to the edge of the dish.
1st layer -- canned refried beans
2nd -- 1 lb. ground beef, cooked, drained, and seasoned to taste with taco seasoning
3rd -- diced and drained fresh tomatoes, or 1 can Rotel tomatoes, drained
4th -- sour cream
5th -- shredded lettuce
6th -- shredded sharp Cheddar cheese or Mexi-blend cheese
7th -- chopped green onions
Chill thoroughly and serve with crackers, fresh veggies, corn chips, etc.

The 7 Layer Dip that I know is as follows:
1 can refried beans
12 oz sour cream
1 packet taco seasoning
1 small can sliced black olives
2 Roma Tomatoes, diced
12 oz package of cheddar cheese
1/2 cup diced green onion
1 cup finely shredded iceburg lettuce
Mix the sour cream and 1/2 the taco seasoning packet together. I usually do it to taste and use more of the seasoning, but do it to your taste. Spread out the refried beans on a serving platter. Layer starting with the sour cream mixture on top of the refried beans, onions, tomatoes, olives, lettuce, and then the cheese. You can add some nice chopped cilantro too for some additional flavor and greenery on top! Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!

I always take & spread 1 can refried beans into bottom of casserole or serving dish. Over that, I spread a little lettuce finely chopped, 1 can rotel tomatoes. Mix together 1 container sour cream with 1 pkg of dry taco seasoning, then spread over top. Cover with shredded mexican cheese, black olives & sliced green onions. Serve chilled with chips or flavored crackers......
