Yes they can. I have personally met a beagle who detected his mistress' cancer. You can google Animal Miracles for stories of animals who smell cancer, heart problems or burning electrical wires in homes :).
Dogs will always sniff bums as a matter of course: that's how they exchange information. They'll spend more time on you if you have lots of "news"... for example you are menstruating or ill or even if you sat in something interesting.
If I were you I would see a different doctor or be more insistent with the one who prescribed you the cream. Usually anal bleeding is a sign of something serious.... at least in animals which is where my expertise lies.
Good luck.

It has been proven that dogs can indeed sense some illnesses in people...including but not necessarily cancer. Many dogs can know when a person is getting ready to have an epileptic seizure and are being trained to stay close to their owners when they sense one is coming, much in the way a seeing eye dog.
Dogs often sniff at people and other dogs anywhere where they can find distinct odors...that's how they familiarize themselves with people and other dogs. It may not be because you have an illness, but I'd talk to another doctor if I were you to see if the bleeding isn't something more serious.

Dogs are attracted to all kinds of odours, being good or bad, perfumed or disgusting.
Sometimes a very embarrassing thing happens to me: every time I get my period and I go to my cousin's house, her dog comes sniffing my bottom and one time I was seated on the floor I had to run from him and push him really hard so he would stop sniffing in the front... Not all dogs do this.. mine doesn't, fortunately! Dogs just smell odours, I don't think they "sniff" diseases in particular.
The doctor prescribed you a cream, probably you have severe hemorrhoids, no? Severely irritated intestines? There are various hypothesis.
I would advise you to go to your doctor again, tell him that you have not got better with the medicine that he gave you and you could enquire him about the possibility of making a colonoscopy as cancer exam prevention.. Talk to him and see what he proposes..
Don't be worried in advance.
Hope everything is fine!

I think they can. Actually I heard from a girl on here whose father had cancer and the dog nosed it out. And there was a woman on TV whose dog kept putting his head on her breast; she later found out she had breast cancer. A dog's sense of smell is more powerful than ours, and they probably smell the blood too.
