We have the national park system because there will always be people who feel that any land, however beautiful and unique it may be, is open to commerical development. So long there's a profit to be made, all forests would be cut down, all lands would be mined, all animals would be eaten or processed, and all water would be diverted, and there would be nothing left for future generations to enjoy of the original wild lands. Mankind should not be diminished to the level of short-sighted people who are more willing than most to destroy beauty for the sake of short-lived dollars. Hence, the creation of the National Park system is really about the "purchase of land by the general public", so that these lands now belong to the people of America, instead of a few that have the potential to ruin them.
