To make this very, very succinct, they were largely diaspora Jews living in Europe--and in Europe, the dominant religion was Christianity. And Christianity was powerful and strong and wealthy and very, very suspicious of anyone who wasn't Christian. Because Jewish folk did not recognize Jesus as the "son of god", they were targeted for persecution. This led to them being separated from Christians, living in "ghettoes", being called "secretive" and it also led to occasional wholesale slaughter in the name of Jesus (see "pogrom"). It's hard to be the minority religion in a very "religious" society. Just ask a Jewish American!

Because they are God's chosen people. Satan has tried hard to destroy them since the redeemer would come from the tribe of Judah, and of course, he failed. God promised he would preserve a remnant through the final hour. They have suffered both because they rejected their redeemer and because they are still God's chosen people, and all who have opposed them have gone away, and will so in the future.
Gen 12:1 And Jehovah had said to Abram, Go out from your land and from your kindred, and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you.
Gen 12:2 And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great; and you will be a blessing.
Gen 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, and curse the one despising you. And in you all families of the earth shall be blessed.

Oh, boy! Just wait until the answers start coming and I think you will be able to see for yourself. But IMHO, it's because we have been around for over 5,000 years and refuse to be annihilated and have done well beyond our numbers.

Because, sadly enough, the vast majority of them still reject the fact that their long awaited Messiah has already come, ascended into Heaven, from where He will someday soon return. Imagine their surprise when they find out He came already, went to Heaven, and soon He will come in the clouds of Glory to take those who have accepted Him as their Saviour to be with Him.Their rejection of Him is why .
