I currently have a bichon (Harry) who I love to death. Great little dog, very lovable, not much maintenance if you keep them clipped short. Mom & Dad had a Yorkie, Great little dog but very high maintenance, definately has some terrier traits.
The only thing about a bichon is that they get lonely, they like company. If you have another pet, cat or dog, that they can play with that's best.

How can you 'compare' a Bichon Freise with a Yorkshire Terrier? The Bichon is a medium/large dog, and the Yorkie is a 'small/toy' dog, and BOTH of those can be 'great dogs' for very different reasons. And why do you want a 'pedigreed dog' of any kind (especially one that requires lots of time, attention, and grooming) when there are so many good MUTTS available from the 'dog pound' or any rescue society? If you are a 'good dog owner' you'll want a 'neutered' pet anyway, to keep more dogs from being abused or abandoned, and by choosing 'just some mutt' from the pound or a rescue society, you'll be HELPING ALL DOGS to find much better homes. But choose WISELY ... because a 'large dog' must be taken out and 'walked' regularly (at least twice a day, up to four times a day) so it can 'use the potty', while a tiny dog like a yorkie can be trained to 'go on paper' in only one room and you can simply 'pick up the paper and throw it away' much easier ... but even a Yorkie likes to go out and take walks ... and that means that the DOG gets to do some of the walking and not always 'be carried' because it's so 'cute.'

I've never had a yorkie but my friends have.
I have had a bichon and they are a very very loveable breed but VERY hard to house train. I've had several breeds in my lifetime and the bichon was the hardest for me to house train. They get along with other animals which is a big plus and love all people.
Boxer are the best!!

I would go with the Bichon Frise. Their coat is so much easier to take care of. They are a heartier dog, as I feel the Yorkies are so delicate. Plus Yorkies have a lot of oil on their coat which I feel gives them an odor.
Good Luck.

Bichon is the way to go, but be ready for HIGH FREAKIN MAINTENANCE. Yorkies I just have a tendency to want to kick across the room.

If you're really dead set on getting a pure bred dog, you might want to try some of these links for rescue groups:
for bichons:
http://www.infodog.com/fancierpages/rescue/a_b.htm#Bichon%20Frise
and for Yorkies:
http://www.infodog.com/fancierpages/rescue/w_y.htm#Yorkshire%20Terrier
Personally, I think Yorkies are much cuter.

Yorkie, by FAR!!! My little 12 week yorkie Rigel is laying on my lap right now taking a nap. I love this liitle guy, and they aren't as much trouble as you may think, not any different than any other dog.
