The way I spoke it would be correct in every detail.
The way you spoke it would be in some way flawed.
The trouble is, you would see our positions reversed!
There would be need of a central academy to decide on the exact meaning of words. The trouble is, nobody would be able to agree who was a fit and proper person to serve on it. You wouldn't approve of my grasp of language and I wouldn't approve of yours.
We would lose a great deal of the colour and charm of communication. All sorts of people would be out of a job: language teachers, translators, interpreters, etc. There would be no more language exchange programmes or summer courses in languages at university. In fact, the whole attitude to modern languages would have to change, as presumably they would be regarded as ancient languages, in the way Latin is.
On the other hand, we'd save all the money spent at the moment on having things translated and going on courses.
What a sad idea! Let's not do it!

The disadvantage would be the cultural loss as different points of view became intertwined. However, this would be a moot point after a few generations had passed, since they wouldn't miss what they never had.
At that point you're left with unbridled communication and understanding.
Please keep in mind that being human, it would be intolerable for some of us. These would be the people that would invent a new language so that they might set themselves apart, but they wouldn't give up the common language. In fact this would probably happen in a number of locations or between various groups.
The reality is that with global communication expanding at the rate it is, the common language will eventually happen. I'd say three centuries at most. (If we don't kill ourselves first. Now there's a cheery thought.)
I would hope that should we ever establish a common tongue, that it's not English or any other national tongue full of unnecessary complexity and redundancy. Esperanto comes to mind. Simple and expressive.

If it were only one language I would lose my hobby and maybe move to Mars and find some alien languages as the dictatorship of one single language is enough to make people kill themselves
Sorry I don't see any advantages in a centralized German speaking world :)

advantage: easier comunication, less misunderstanding, less racial/discrimination abuse... disadvantage: less cultural diversity... i "think" there is a connection between the language spoken and the civilization advancement. eg: imagine what would happen if from the beginning the people living in australia speak chinese and the people living in japan speak english?

Advantage would be that everyone would understand each other without the communication gap and you could visit any country in the world and not feel lost.
Disadvantage is there would be a huge culture loss, no diversity, nothing new, no sexy French or Italian accents...BORING!
I will take the smooth accent anyday thanks!!
