I have always been able to tell this by the taste of the ice cream and by how long it has been left in the freezer since I bought it.

It stays in the freezer for all of its life... It will probabilly last 1 year if you don't open it, 2-3 months after opened and refrozen...

it has a bad smell to it and if its been in the freezer to long it will look all chunks of ice and will not taste very nice

if it's still frozen, the texture should be a good gauge. and ice in the tub (too much thawing and re-freezing).
