Allahu'al, I agree you don't need to enter a holy place to carry out your prayers, my question is why can't women go to a Mosque if they want to, it's Gods house and they should be able to enter if they choose to.

I watched a documentary on British TV that had a group of devout Muslim women who believed their faith said they could pray in the mosque and that they had equal rights under religious law. They were prepared to pray at the back - due to modesty rules which are the only rules as far as I am aware governing dress and behavior of both men and women in the quaran itself. For anyone confused about modesty and praying think of the way a Muslim prays.

The women even tried to pray in the car park or on the street outside the mosque and they were verbally and physically attacked by the men. It was disgusting, there were men fighting (at some points literally) for their rights inside and outside these mosques. The women didn't have the right to sit on the council that governs the mosque or to speak to the Imam.

What they did discover was women praying in ordinary houses separate from the men. They had created their own space so they could pray communally too.

Islam like most religions disagrees within itself on a lot of matters.

women CAN pray in mosques - true some fuddy old men prefer that they dont and wll go to lengths to make it difficult for them to attend. but in Islam they are allowed to go if they choose. there is no pressure on them to attend mosques and there is less emphasis than on men going. main reasons are that women have other things to do - only in the last 50 years or so in the west have we seen women working - prior to that most women looked after home and family. prayers take dedication and time - if you've got a baby whose going to hold it while u pray? so for practical reasons a lot of women dont go, but many (esp. young women w'out kiddies; older women etc. and women who just simply want to go) do attend mosque. Loads of mosques have high female attendance - they even have separate womens' sections. At the end of the day, as you say God is available for everbody and is everywhere - u dont have to go to a mosque to find him. Personally given a choice of trekking out of my cosy home to a mosque or being snug at home i know which i would choose.

Because they can't put their butt in the air in front of the nose of their husband. In shopping centres they all go to the Ladies toilet set their little carpet on the floor after they, washed their feet and splashed water everywhere, and they pray for 20 minutes. If you are a "Westerner" in S.audi A.rabia and if you want to use the toilet you better wait and hold it until the prayer is finished before you can go to the toilet to relieve yourself. And don't forget to have your own wipes as there is no toilet paper . Sad but True!

Who says women cant pray in the Mosque.................
In my local area there are let me guess some 15 mosques... and all of them have place for women..........
.
But one thing to remember that they cant pray standing next to each other because men get attracted to women quickly.... and that is how they forget for the reason they are in the moque which is prayer.....
.
Islam is the fastest growing religion, even in the US.... and guess what majority of the new Muslims are WOMEN.... I am not sure but I think for every new male Muslim there are 4 new female Muslims.............

For the same reasons women cannot be priests in many sects of Christianity. Inequalities exist within many religions, and each religious inequality is just as valid or invalid as the other.

*Edit* I realize that women are allowed into churches to pray with men. My point was that your question ignores cultural relativism. It doesn't matter if women can go into churches, because Mosques aren't churches. Their cultural practices are just as vadid as any of the ones we had and still have in this country. The truth is, not all cultures evolve and progress at the same rate. It wasn't long ago that women were second class citizens here in America, so maybe it's just going to take some time for womens rights in other parts of the world to catch up. And womens roles when it comes to religion vary. Some sects of christianity allow them to be leaders, while some don't. I don't know what the case is in Islam, but God is available to everyone regardless of gender segregation in a building.

There was a programme on Horizon - more than 40% of British mosques will not allow women in to pray. That is a fact, although muslims will deny it.
