I'm not exactly sure why my Doctor prescribed amoxicillan when I'm not allergic to penicillan. Will penicillan work better to get rid of my strep? I'm in pain too...my mother has been giving me hydrocodone but it's not working that well. Does anyone know of a better way to relieve the pain of strep, medicinal or herbal??

The pain of strep throat should go away within 24 hours of being treated with penicillin. If the pain does not go away, I suggest that you probably have mononucleosis caused by Epstein Barr virus and not an antibiotic sensitive strep infection.

Amoxicillin is a new form of penicillin. It is more effective because bacteria are becoming more resistant to the older antibiotics in general. The penicillins have always been the drug of choice for strep. The pain with this can be bad..try warm gargles, avoid spicy and hard (scratchy) foods, get anesthetic
lozenges or throat spray.

Hydrocodone is pretty drastic way to sooth a sore throat.

Chloraseptic will numb the pain.

If it's really bad, Cepastat, but it's nasty stuff.

Amoxicillan isnt for people that are allergic to penicillin. It is just an orally active form. Penicillin has to be given by injection.

An anti-biotic will treat the infection, not relieve the pain.

I suggest a cold compress, or if you're short on fund$ try a bag of frozen peas around your neck. It will numb the pain.

Chloraseptic and other spray treatments too will numb the affected area.

Sip hot herbal tea with honey and lemon. Lemon really helps sore throats. Lots of lots of liquids and use whatever the doctor prescribes!
Try cough drops with Vitamin C...they taste amazing!
