Today is January 29, 2007.

Why are there still people on Earth who believe in Creationism?

Do you believe, as I do, that this is a failure of Evolution Education. We should be ashamed of ourself that on January 29, 2007 there are still people who subscribe to Creationism.

What do you propose we do?

because a lot of people are, frankly, ignorant.

And creationists with pseudo-science goodlooking sites like this:

they prey on that ignorance with theories that sound reasonable at first glance.

The only solution would be to educate every single last human on earth. So let's get busy.

Acceptance of the clear scientific evidence of biological evolution does not negate belief in creationism. In fact, if the universe had not come into existence, there would be nothing to evolve. Therefore the fact of existence, including all the natural processes that operate within the existing universe, including biological evolution, demands an origin and therefore a source who/which is responsible for bringing it into existence. This is creation. Biological evolution didn't begin until a very long time after the creation of the universe, since there were no living things for a very long time.

It's not a failure of evolution education. All the rational arguments in the world will not sway the true believers because they don't accept the arguments as being valid. No matter how much you tell them in school, they still have the parents and the church instilling fear.

EDIT: I think things are progressing but very slowly.

People are free to believe what they want in America. Some other countries may dictate beliefs, but not here. Children get their parents' beliefs by osmosis and sometimes a leather belt. It is hard to break childhood training. Figure that 50% of the people have two-digit IQs and do not have the brain power to think outside of the box. Just let them be happy in their beliefs and move out in your own direction.

If people are left to freely inquire about subjects, truth will ultimately prevail. The one thing you cannot do is subscribe people to forced education, because either people will end up professing to believe something they truly do not, which makes them hypocrites, or they stick to their beliefs and are mocked as fools. Just leave everything to free inquiry, and the truth will prevail. Only lies need the support of the government to be propagated. Truth can stand on its own.

I taught an Evolution for non-majors class recently. There were 13 students. I was the only atheist. In 15 lectures, I think I convinced them that Creationism was not Science....that's about all we can hope for. We can't put a gun to their heads and order them to think rationally.

Evolution is not a subject taught at elementary level, in the same way that Quantum mechanics are not. Unfortunately in the USA (and it is overwhelmingly the USA) there are those with a political agenda who are happy to trash a scientific theory because it does not conform to their prejudices. Its not about education, at least not specifically.

Only in America did it fail-everywhere else people got the message. It's for Americans to address that and determine what the problem is.

You can't stamp out stupid.

But you could hopefully change the social climate so that it's no longer something to be proud of (as it is in some parts of the states).
