Just watched Dispatches on Channel 4, which covered the current chaos in Iraq. The programme suggested that the government is unofficially supporting what can only be described as 'ethnic cleansing' of Sunni muslims by the Shi'a Muslims (who are now in power).

I really don't know anything beyond what I just watched, but it seems that where once the Sunnis were persecuting the Shi'as, now that Saddam is no more, the Shi'as are essentially getting revenge.

My understanding is that Islam doesn't itself promote the killing of a fellow Muslim, so how can these two groups be brought back together so the killing stops?

They will never get along. The war between the Sunnis and the Shi'as have been waging for more than two hundred years. They will never exist with each other. You should watch the history channel . They did a program all about Iraq, when it used tobe called Babylon.

If Mohammed returned. No, wait, they'd argue over whether that were really Mohammed.
The actual answer is scarier. I had a friend in college who was from Turkey (and as far as I know, he never went back). He told me that one thing that Turkey inherited from the Ottoman Empire is the "clothes of the prophet." The reason that Turkey's government went secular is that God didn't want those let out yet. However, now we see Turkey increasingly pushed away from the EU and into the arms of the Moslems bordering them on the east. If any of the imams or ayatollahs in Iraq or Iran were to obtain those clothes, he could claim divine position over both branches of Islam (and Sufi as well). We should expect that to happen in a few years. When it does, duck.

I must point out that your understanding of islam, is in fact, a misunderstanding of islam.

2 million muslims were killed by fellow muslims in the 1980-88 Iran/Iraq war.

Muslims murder, mutilate and defile each other in every part of the world. They stone each other to death in a barbaric mob, hang women for adultery, and hang young teenage boys on suspicion of being gay.

Muslims will never stop killing themselves as long as they follow the teachings of nutcase muhammed. They will be the start of the next World War - that will happen as soon as President Musharraf of Pakistan is assassinated and overthrown, and the extremist nutjobs get their fingers on the trigger of Pakistans nuclear weapons. He has survived 5 attempts on his life already, and they will get him in the end.

The Sunni's persecuted the Shia's since 700AD... This isn't a new fight. Ethnic cleansing... What a lark, they are fighting one another, that is one of the reasons that we need to get out...

They can't unite. They believe different things. Even if we left, the Sunni's would be fighting. That is why IRAN want's to get involved... They are shia...

They would all unite, if they took one good, hard look at the innocent Children, women and elderly that are suffering. I heard there were even dogs eating dead corpses. They refer to us as Infidels, well they need to take a good look at themselves. The children are so sad and suffering. Peace will hopefully come , soon.
