my cat is sweet and loving sometimes, but then out of nowhere he'll start biting and just generally being mean. is this some kind of disorder, or just the way kittens are?

That's normal... the kitten probably doesn't yet realize how rough he is being. When he does that (play rough), just stop play right away saying, "No!" and then ignore him or leave the room. He'll soon realize that rough playing (biting, clawing, kicking) will end his "good time" plenty quick. He'll mellow out as he matures. Just make sure he has lots of kitty toys to play and a window perch to look out at the world from. Bored cats become destructive cats.

I think that all cats have a touch of bipolar disorder. Mine is companionable and cuddly most of the time, but once a day or so she'll start racing around the house chasing what I can only assume are invisible Martians (or sometimes chasing toy mousies). This appears to be normal in cats, as I've had others who behaved similarly.

He's just playing. My little girl does it too, I just think its funny. She all relaxed one minute and the next her ears are pushed back and starts attacking my hand....I think she only attacks my hand because she knows I won't hurt her like her older brothers will.

Just play back, pretend your hand is an animal and toss him gently. A little rough housing never hurts, he will love it.

And if you really don't like it. Just get up and walk away when he starts, he will learn that that behavior ends playtime

Make sure you have a large scratching post or a friend for him to rough house with, it will help him get it out of his system

How old is he?

If your kitten is between 4.5 to 6 months it might be the hormones kicking in. Check and see if you can see the little balls dropping down at his rear. If you can, it is time to get him fixed. His behaviour should straighten out almost immediately.

Yes. This is feline manic-depression. Some states offer free medical (Veterinarian) psychiatric help for cats, and there is a special form of catnip that will calm them down quickly

If your cat is declawed that is the reason. It is very traumatizing and it will change their behavior.
