Here's a helpful chart from LexarMedia:
http://www.lexar.com/digfilm/capacity_chart.html

The chart only provides approximate numbers, because the actual number will depend on your image quality setting (level of compression).

Enchantress provided an excellent chart, but it does't mention compression. Resolution and quality are not exactly the same thing, so make sure that you set your camera to highest resolution AND quality. Sometimes quality is called Basic, Fine, SuperFine, sometimes it's listed as a number of stars. Check your camera manual for more details, but even a 10.0 MP camera, if the quality/compression is set wrong, can result in a poor picture.

The photos may be lost. If you can't access you can always try reformatting it, to see if the card will be useable in the future. Take it to a photlab first before you reformatt it as it will erase all the photos for sure. They may have a way of getting the photos off so check with them first.

Your second answer is correct, if you set your camera at it's best setting at 5 MP.409 is correct, I usually say about 400 shots.

You should be able to fit about 409 pictures on your card according to this comparison chart:
http://www.camerafarm.com.au/camera/customer/pages.php?pageid=22
(This is assuming you have your camera set on high resolution, since high-resolution pictures take up more space. The lower the resolution, the more pictures you can fit on your card.)
