I would do initials because I know I wouldn't wear something after the wedding that said "Maid of Honor" on it.
Instead, do the initials on the bags and maybe sew something right on the inside of the bag that says, "Maid Of Honor, thanks for being a part of my special day" and then put the date.

I agree that your first idea is very cute. But thinking practically, I don't think many people would wear anything that says their title from a wedding, no matter how close a friend/family they are to you. You might consider some inexpensive T-shirts for the wedding day/bachelorette party, that say their titles. It's fun and not a big deal if they never wear them again. Then you can just do their initials on the totes.

Your first idea is "too" cute - it's downright sugary and gaudy. If you put that on the totes - which is a cheap gift considering your bridesmaids had to pay for their dresses and your mother and mother-inlaw helped pay for the wedding - then at least do the monograms so they can use the totes. I wouldn't walk around with a tote that read "bridesmaid" on it! It's suggestive that I'm single and not marriage material! If however, you are footing the bill for your own wedding - no help from the mothers and you are paying for your bridesmaid's dresses, then you can put anything you damn well please on the totes. Good luck.

wow, are you an organized bride! i love the idea of 'bridesmaid' 'maid of honor' etc. on the bags but i agree with you they would get far more use if you put their initials instead.
do you have time and desire to perhaps do both? initials on the outside and perhaps the 'bridesmaid' etc. inside the bag? just inside the opening where they could see it when they opened the bag?
its your day so you can just say to heck with it and put both on the outside of the bag. it is a very cute idea and i am sure whatever you decide they will treasure the gift for many years to come.

Would YOU carry around a tote bag that says "Maid of Honor" on it, 5 years after you were in the wedding?
That's a surefire way to guarantee that the bag will end up in the trash or at the Salvation Army. I'd even reconsider monogramming the bags at all ... I don't like wearing or carrying stuff with my initial or name on it. And many other women don't, either.

I think that it is better to just put the names or initials on it. My brother and sister-in-law gave me a purse and a makeup bag with my name on it and everyone that sees them asks where I got them.
