I've just read a question from a jewish person, asking why he cannot be friends with muslims. Lots of people responded, saying such things as 'who says you can't be friends with a muslim' etc. and 'wars are between governments not people'.

All that stuff is easy to say, but I think it's very glib to say things like this in response to his question. In reality, what do you think would happen to this jewish person if he walked along a busy street in Ramallah, or some other Palestinian area?

I think it's quite hard for Jews & Muslims to be friends when the Israeli government builds a big concrete wall around the Palestinian area. Looks a bit like a ghetto to me.

Chrisharbridge wonders why Israel has built a barrier (not a "wall") to separate Israel proper from their peace-loving cousins. Perhaps he has forgotten the suicide bomber who killed three Israelis in the last week by infiltrating into Israel and blowing himself up. Well, there were many more frequent instances of Islamic terrorists murdering innocent Israeli citizens until the barrier went up. When it is finally completed, the murderous attacks should be reduced even further.

If he thinks that this is a sign of bad neighbors, how does he rate the Arab terrorists?

And the answer to the asker's question is that it is entirely unsafe for a Jew to walk in Ramallah or Jenin. He would likely be killed by one of his Arab "cousins."

And it should be noted that despite the asker's choice of words, there is no place in the Middle East called "Palestine." What had been Palestine was divided among the Arabs (80 percent of Palestine, now called Jordan) and the Jews (20 percent of Palestine, now called Israel).

Losar_aira wonders what would happen to a Muslim who walked in Israel's cities. He would be treated just like an Israeli Arab. They have equal rights to Israeli Jews, and have a standard of living much higher than Arabs in neighboring countries.

I have been in Israel and let me just tell you that it is impossible. If he wants to take a walk in Ramallah he might want to walk with a coffin attached to his hand. Becasue that is how he will be returned home.
ISRAEL IS NOT AN OCCUPYING FORCE GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS PEOPLE.
Let me tell you my personal experience. I had a best friend growing up. We did everything together played sports, went on double dates, and etc. We were like brothers. He was originally from Pakistan. He had no problem with me being Jewish. Then we went to college. He rediscovered his faith and now he wants nothing to do with me. He even told me several weeks ago, “a good Jew is a dead Jew.” How do you like that and he was my best friend for almost 11 years.
Muslims do not want to be friends with the Jews for they hate the Jews as much as they hate the Christians. They may tell you otherwise but look at the statistics. Look at Palestinian Christians and asked them what their Palestinian muslim brothers did to them, in Philippines they are killing Christians, in Thailand they are killing Buddhists, in India they attack Hindus. In Saudi Arabia Christians may not express their views. In Lebanon there was genocide against Christians thus so many escaped. Look at the Egyptian Coptic Christians and ask them how the Muslims treated them and you will see it is not a rosy picture.

Hmmmm....a lot of knuckleheads recognize that a Jew can not exist in Rammallah or in palestinian territory but ignore the facts that Arabs live everyday and prosper in Israel. Muslims live and prosper in Israel...Palentinian leadership could learn a few lessons from Israel.....read on.
The Israeli government overwhelmingly approved the appointment of the country’s first Muslim cabinet minister yesterday, billing it as an important step for a longsuffering minority.

But the appointment of Raleb Majadele, mired for weeks in political infighting and charges of racism, drew renewed criticism from hard-liners who said the move was little more than political expediency. Even Arab lawmakers dismissed the development, saying the government has little real interest in improving the lot of Israel’s Arabs.

Majadele said his goals as a cabinet minister would be "promoting coexistence between the two peoples inside the state, and promoting dialogue between the Palestinians and the Israelis toward negotiations and political agreement."

Majadele, a parliamentary backbencher from the Labor party, says his appointment is meant to give representation to Israel’s Arabs, who make up about 20 percent of the country’s 7 million citizens. He has predicted that, in the future, every Israeli government will be obliged to include an Arab minister.

"The present government is proud to be the first government to give executive representation to the Arab Muslim minority," said Miri Eisin, a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Israel’s parliament has always had Arab lawmakers — today, there are 13 members out of 120. But the country has had only one Arab cabinet minister before: Salah Tarif, a Druse, who was appointed in 2001 and forced to resign nine months later under a cloud of corruption allegations.

This appointment was more contentious because Muslim and Christian Arabs, unlike the Druse, do not serve in the army and have a far weaker identification with Israel.

Arabs have been slowly taking on a more visible role in Israeli society in recent years. There is an Arab Supreme Court justice, as well as several diplomats and senior civil servants. There is also a smattering of Arab TV journalists and actors.

But Arabs lag behind Israel’s Jewish population in income, education and standard of living, and have long lacked representation in government commensurate with their numbers.

Oh come, now. When are we going to evolve our ideas and stop killing people because they think or look different?

I know you're not an antagonist but this type of attitude just exacerbates the problem, makes it normal.

I know people have done (and still do) things in the name of what went before but that's no reason not to change things.

I know I sound naive here, but I'm not, I've had an interesting life, spent time in prison and lived in 4 continents as an adult. The one thing I've learnt from all this is it's time for an evolution of ideas, to start thinking about how we can make things better. If not us then for our children.

Palestinians follow Ghandi's example and lie down in the road when the tanks come. The world (and particularly the US) will no longer be able to support them. If you respond with violence you are as bad as them. Even if they did kill your children.

Israelis, organise mass public protests against the terrorist every time a suicide bomber kills one of your fello Israelis. That way, we can show the world the situation of violence and retaliation is wrong. Governments will have to listen, and things will change.

Let's evolve. Please.

What happens when Palestinian children walk to school via that huge wall? Israeli children throw rocks at them. This is a fact, the Israelis must not excused for such behaviour.

As for a Jewish person, I would get along fine with a Jewish person who didn't support Israel. They do exist.

Just for you, one of my best friends is a Hindu and I'm a Muslim! Figure that one out!
