The term originated long ago...and it refers to a rummage or garage type sale now...
according to legend...kings would give each other white elephants as gifts, but what did you do with a white elephant? nothing!...so....when people say they are having a white elephant sale, it means they are selling things from their houses that they can no longer use.

It's a holy animal in places like India. It eats and mates, absolutely useless for peasants.
On the other hand, it is an elephant colored as snow trying to camouflage in a green Asian jungle or brown African sand...useless.

Its a game played at Christmas parties when everyone exchanges gag gifts. First person opens a gift. The second person can steal that gift or select an un-opened one. The third can do the same....and so on and so forth.

It's when you bring something from your house as a party gift, as does everyone else, and then everyone takes turns picking gifts or stealing a gift that has already been picked. It's a stupid corporate Christmas party thing.
