Christians think that since THEIR position speculates as to the origins of existence, the "competing" stance must as well... and therefore conflate the two.

Just try science, just for a day or two do some research. A lot of people who think the bible is wrong have read the bible. If you think evolution and the big bang are wrong why not do some research, and before you find a question at a Christian website, see if it has already been answered, I bet it has. I looked a both with a very open mind. No one has all the answers, but it's become obvious that one side is a lot closer than the other.

As a Christian - I have no issues with the "Big Bang Theory" as it pertains to the universe. I believe that there was indeed a very big bang when God commanded it to be so. When God commanded the world to exist, it started at a central location and expanded in an outward direction. (And still is expanding)
I do not believe in the big bang theory as a cause to Life.
I do not believe in the theory of evolution as a cause to Life.
I DO believe in survival of the fittest (the strong survive, and the weak die), but not that species genetically mutated into new species.

Without the existence of millions of universes, each with its own set of physics, one has to conclude that there is some form of intelligent design that created the Big Bang with the intent of creating life. Otherwise the odds of Life happening through chaos are far to slim to be an accident.
That is why Hawkins and others have put forth the theory that other universes exist on the other side of black holes. (Bubble Universes)
Truth is we just don't know

Well, actually neither theory "bothers" Christians....and both of them work quite well with the Intelligent design theory. Where G-d created the universe with the big bang as a step in creating humans.

Absolutely! Without Christianity both theories are meaningless. Christianity provides the backdrop just as the darkness provides the setting to see the stars at night. Finally someone has seen Gods divine plan for all of us to live in a harmonious way! Hallelujah!

While I understand that scientists (or at the very least, science teachers) have divorced the two now, when I was in high school evolution was taught as being the result of the "big bang."

I thought they liked the big bang?
Something coming from nothing is what they're all about.
If only someone told them that the big bang is not a theory about the start of the universe and only about its rapid expansion...

You sure are using "Christian" in ageneral sense. The largest Christian denomination in the world openly endorses evolution. "Creationists" actually make up a small minority of Christians world-wide.
