What does PAR mean in a Flood Lamp specification?

For example, I am trying to spec a PAR38 lamp. What does par stand for?

it stands for parabolic aluminized reflector,, then the number after it is the square inch surface aea of the reflector

Parabolic Reflector...in simple terms, it's a can that is shaped in such a way as to "aim" the light to a certain point
