I know that typically the brides family pays for the wedding and the grooms family pays for the rehersal dinner and during the rehersal dinner gifts are given form the bride and groom to the wedding party and parents. What if the bride and groom are paying for everything? Do we still give gifts to our parents (as far as ettiqutte goes)? We are also moving into a new home right before the wedding so our money for extras is limited. We have purchased gifts for my bridesmaid and his best man but werent sure about gifts for the parents. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Typically gifts for the parents are a way of saying "thank you" for giving us the wedding. If you are paying for your own wedding, then gifts for the parents aren't necessary and shouldn't be expected. It's a nice gesture -but if you can't afford it then don't worry about it. I'm getting married and my fiance and I are paying for everything - my mother is on a fixed income and I don't expect monetary help from her, but she is in charge of interviewing and choosing the caterer - therefore I am getting her a gift. If your or his parents are helping at all, whether monetary or doing some of the leg-work, then you should try to eek out a small token. Goodluck.

Usually you give them a gift as a thank you for what they have done. Seeing that you are paying for the ceremony yourself a gift isn't really necessary, but if you feel that you should give them something then a small gift is appropriate. Give them a pretty picture frame that your wedding photo can go in. Or even a frame that THEIR picture from the wedding can go into. Maybe give the Mom's a rose during the ceremony. And a toast to them at the reception. Congrats!!

I think your parents will understand if you can't afford it but have you thought of something simple like a photo album or handkerchief? Try looking at the Parents' Gifts page at www.customweddingsolutions.com. They have some very nice stuff for great prices. Like $15 or so.

Wen i got married we gave a speech saying that without them we wouldn't be the persons we are today and we gave them some flowers and asked them to dance the first dance after the opening dance.
Don't forget them all night and make sure they are having a good time as well.

It is appropriate either way. What we did was, I gave my mom & his mom a pair of pearl earrings ($60) and we got the same jackknife that we gave to the groomsmen to my dad & his dad also.
Or another idea is to give the parents long stemmed roses during the ceremony.

i think you should get them gifts but not very expensive ones...maybe some candles and a nice picture frame from Marshalls and be creative and just add a cute accent bow or something and add your own wedding flair to it...Good Luck..

No gifts are needed for your parents, just lots of hugs, kisses and thank yous for all their help and support. Give them albums of pictures, of course.

Can you afford to buy them a lovely frame with a note in it saying that you will be filling it with one of your wedding pictures of their choice?
