I have my dog neutered last Monday Jan. 22 and when i pick him up after the surgery he was sleepy because of the anesthesia. And after the anesthesia wear off he was fine he just wants to lick himself which i didn't allow, he keeps sleeping for the next 2 days and then back to his old self again, he likes to play and i took him to the park for a walk. the vet said that i should not let him lick the surgery area for 10 days so he it will heal faster.
And my dog has been very good about it.

So just keep your dog from licking her wound and she will be fine.

She'll be groggy after the surgery, and probably for the rest of the day. She should be sent home with pain medication (maybe torbutrol) so give that to her as prescribed by the vet.

All she'll need is a nice place on the floor to sleep. If she usually jumps up in your bed, don't let her. She'll need to be grounded for a while, until the stitches come out.

In a few days she should feel better and should be acting pretty normal. The vet will go over everything you'll need to know when you pick her up after surgery. Just make a list of questions for him if you have any more.

I am getting my 5 month old kitty fixed tomorrow and I was wondering the exact same thing. I am worried she will be lonely when she stays at the vet overnight and I am worried she will be in a lot of pain. I have a 15 minute appointment on Wed. when I pick her up to go over instructions for after surgery. SO then I can tell you about cats. When is your surgery?

Remember that female surgery is far more invasive than male surgery. Think if you had your uterus removed. DON'T under any circumstances let her jump up on the furniture as she could end up with internal bleeding. GENTLE exercise is fine, and most vets recommend staying on the lead for 10 days or so. It drove my Bearded Collie girl demented to be restricted like that, but the vet gives you the advice that should be followed. My vet says that the pain threshold is much lower in the toy breeds, and he did give me painkillers for my Toy Poodle when she had her hysterectomy.

When I had my dog fixed she did great. She was a little sore for a few days, and wouldn't let me touch her belly for about a week. She also slept most of the evening when I brought her home from the vet, but she wasn't grumpy.

She will likely be sore for a couple of weeks, so it is important to keep her from over-doing exercise until she is fit again. It isn't a fact that she will become lazy or gain weight! ALL professional service dogs (guide dogs, K-9 cops, etc,) are spayed/neutered, as are most search and rescue dogs.

Just give her plenty of loving attention, and she will be herself in no time..I had my 7 year old done this summer, and it took her 3 weeks to be 100%.

She will be very sleepy so it's normal to let her sleep. Make sure that you keep her in a comfortable area make sure it's really clean. If she is going to get staples don't leave blankets that can stick or pull on the staples when she lies down. They may have some bleeding but it's normal. The best thing to keep her comfortable is just let her be. If you see that she wants to be picked up be really careful as you may hurt her when you pick her up.

She will be groggy, sore, and slow for a day or two. The best thing to do to make her comfortable is leave her alone and let her settle in & rest. Make sure she has access to water & food (as directed by your vet.)

Dogs are incredibly resilient, so she should heal fairly quickly.

Thank you for being a responsible pet owner! Good girl!

My vet gave my cat something to keep him groggy for the first 24 hours after he came home. I didn't get it for my dog when we had him fixed and I regret it. I left him home in his crate and went to get groceries. A house guest that was staying for a few weeks let him out while I was gone and he jumped up on my very high bed and ripped his stitches. Don't let her jump!!!

The spaying of a female dog should not change her personally. Just keep her warm and cozy and don't let her lick or chew on the incision. I'm sure the vet will give you further advice.
