A Co-worker insists that horse racing is very expensive and the owners are probably bankrupt now.

While the owners have insurance on the horse itself, the financial loss could be devastating because the insurance is a 1-time deal ($25-30M) doesn't cover the losses associated with any potential future purses the horse could have won and likely only skims the surface of the multi-millions generated from stud fees and foals that the owners would be able to race.

And while extracting semen for future insemination seems like a good idea, it won't work. The only way a horse is allowed to race in any sort of sanctioned event is if they are conceived naturally. And it has to be straight through the bloodline, in other words, you couldn't take the semen and artificially impregnate another horse and then use that offspring horse to procreate naturally.

I doubt it. They have lots of other race horses, and probably had their own money anyway. And Barbaro was heavily insured (the more a horse wins, the more you need to insure it and he was undefeated), and I'm assuming they could still collect since he died as a result of a racing injury.

Most race horse owners have money to begin with. They probably own other race horses and investments as well. They will, however, lose considerable money without the stud fees. As for being broke, not likely.

No Way......I believe they will collect somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million dollars in insurance money.

No, the Jackson's have plenty of money. Don't worry about them...but I'll tell them you are concerned the next time I see them at the track.

i'd be willing to bet that they extracted about a gallon of semen from him and they will be selling it and using it artificially inseminating phillies around the world, for a very hefty price
