When taking our grandchildren on long journeys, I have a "surprise bag" and every 30/40 mins I take out something from the bag to keep the children amused. They don't have to be big or expensive eg: a small tub of playdough, a wind- up toy, a few small plastic dinosaurs or farm animals, small car with opening doors, a book, a mirror, a few items from a plastic tea set (cups, plates, etc) and some pretend food, finger puppets.....You'll probably need about 4/5 things for each 3 hour journey, so start collecting during the year. And, who knows, with a bit of luck they might fall asleep and you won't need anything!

PORTABLE DVD PLAYER. This is a must have! Do not bring a bunch of toys that make noise unless you want to annoy other people on the plane! Books are great, crayons, snacks, a new toy will be special. Good luck, 3 hours is a pretty short flight.

I think that the best book for the 18 month old is a book called "Puppies" by Fiona Watt. It is a board book and has great touch and feel pictures. My 14 month old can play with it for 30 minutes at a time without getting tired of it.

You won't believe this, but I used to take playdough for my children to play with. The pull-down table was perfect and they loved it! So a few pieces may get in the carpet, oh well. Have you seen airplane carpet---it's already a mess. I took cookie cutters and small rolling pins and they'd have a blast. I got a farm set of cookie cutters and they loved putting black spots on the cut-out cows. At the end of the flight I just put all the "characters" in a large ziplock bag. You can get playdough at the dollar store, so it's easy and inexpensive to replenish supplies. Have fun---this age is really great!

i would have died on a few plane trips without a portable dvd player. my son was about 16 months on his first plane trip, and it was a miracle. if you are looking for something a little less pricey, stickers would be really great for both your kids. just make sure you bring a lot!! crayons and coloring books too. and bring some good snacks along, for sure. my son loves twizzlers, and they won't get crumbs everywhere. i am just sure to have wipes so his hands aren't red!
i dont know what else you can do... other than endure! good luck!

the reason people don't give specifics is because we don't know your children, may i suggest a whole carry on with all the things you have listed, children will loose interest easy, do not let the children see what you got until you are on the plane because they may not be as interested, good luck, don't get stressed out your children will feel it, i have traveled often with my kids and find they do fine three hours is a small flight your children will most likely be in such amazement of everything going on around them that they will do great, most other passengers like to help out too, by talking and stuff

Thomas the tank engine. My son is 27 and loves trains or anything with wheels on the toys, he will play for hours. Read books to him, Who cares about the people on the plane. My son loves playing with letters and and numbers buy a cheap interactive number and letter game. Or buy those markers that only show up on special paper or fingerpaints that only show up on specific paper. My son loves it. You could buy a soft ball and a basketball hoop that sticks to windows very small, like at walmart and apply it to the window or seat and tell them to get it in the hoop, umm..oh yeah, they'll shut up with lolli-pops too.

Bring a little bag of little surprises and bring a new one out every hour or so. Maybe even wrap them, which would also keep them occupied for a while.
Otherwise, I would recommend Tangoes (link below) or something similar because the pieces are magnetic and they can make lots and lots of different things with them.

My daughter - food & a magna doodle (and whever her brother has & won't share)
My son - food and his Hot Wheels (and whatever his sister has & won't share)
Lollypops last a while too. Just be ready with the wipes to clean up.
