You have a very pessimistic view of religion, dude. Did you have a bad experience? Sorry to hear if you did. No, I think church helps much more than it hurts. I'm not the type to push my faith on anyone though. I think the press, by in large, is very anti-religion and therefore pounces on any scandal or negativity it can find. This is true not just in dealing with religion but in most any other subject. The good things that happen are stuck at the end of the news as "human interest" stories. I'd like to see a news show that is nothing but "human interest". This country needs a good cheering up. There are some great people out there.

Well obviously you did not state any actual facts that could be applied to all churches.
First of all, Churches worship and pray to something that exsists. And he will continue to exsist even if know one is left to believe in Him.
Secondly, you do not only put money in the collection plate for church expenses but also for missions and humantarian services.
There are many churches that go unoticed that are very poor and hardly own anything.
So no, churches are not a waste of space.

The church provides moral and spiritual support to it's members. Collection is optional, not mandatory. Many churches put a lot of their money right back into the community (homeless shelters, community improvement projects, marriage counseling, grief support, etc), so it's not like they're always making a profit off it. You don't have to attend the church or believe in it, but they do help people, and in that sense arent a waste of space at all.

Of course I could say that just because you don't believe something doesn't exist won't make it a fact either way.
But instead I will say that any place that allows a community to come together for a common cause can be a good place.
And many churches are a very long way from being rich.

No i don't.
I like em.
But im with bert on golf courses.Except they stop builders from building on the land.
Im sure many people think the same but what would you have in its place.
They are lovely old buildings with redwood trees growing in the grounds. And when you go in you can sit and think and ponder and relax.I can think of worse things in life and a little bit of religion did'nt do no harm.
We all need a bit of support, mentally and spiritually from time to time.It obviously did'nt click with you.Nor me for that matter.
Im only a once a year god botherer.

Wasted space? There are thousands and thousands of church buildings that only get used a few hours a week. That adds up to a lot of expensive real estate and property which is almost always sitting idle.
It's their money and they're free to do what they want but, yeah, it seems like a waste of resources to me.

Are hospitals a waste of space? I mean, we are all going to die anyway?
Church is a hospital for the soul. It is preparing for the final inevitable closing of the door.
People buy insurance and don't use it all the time... What is the difference??

Rather sweeping and judgemental.
Much of the Church's propertry is used for the benefit of the public (including the most deprived) Drug advice, counselling centres, lunch clubs, day centres.... a waste of space?
What would you classify as a good use of space....a pub? a tobacconist? a bingo hall?

No they are not .
When I go to Church I feel closer to God because it is God's house, I learn a lot about God when the Priest gives his sermon which is from the Bible. There is peace and love in the Church. I love going when I can
God Bless You

If they are privately funded, then no - they are not a waste of space. If they help drug addicts become useful members of society, then I believe it is money well spent to benefit the community that they live in.
However, if taxpayers are paying for people to go to a facility every week where they are told that the people who are paying for their facility are sinners and are going to hell, then I would say that a nice park would be better suited to fill that space.
