Why do you get arrested for making jokes about Canada by Border Patrol at the American-Canadian border?

I never heard that happen. Not very many details here to know what happened. American Border Patrol? You have to be talking US Border Patrol because Canada doesn't have one. Patrol being very different than clearing customs agents.
But it is just like you will be arrested in an airport if you joke about terrorism or carrying a weapon. You wouldn't joke to a cop about killing people. And US Border Patrol are cops. If you joke about smuggling weapons, or drugs, etc at the border same result.

You don't get arrested for making jokes about Canada, but you may be detained if you are making jokes about security and/or pretending you have a concealed weapon, are on a terrorist list, or something of that sort. It might seem funny to you, but it isn't funny to the border guards, on either side.

You might think have though it was funny, but I'm pretty sure what ever you said was actually quite insulting. Don't worry... you are the first ignorant American, and you won't be the last. I'm sure the guards thought your behaviour was questionable, so they needed you talk to you a bit more. However, I can't see them actually charging and arresting you for it.

Childish idiotic remarks may be fun for you, but guards have to take even the dumbest remarks seriously, especially when national security is involved.

because we are Canadians and we have respect for our officials they have a hard job to do and someone has to do it and shouldn't have to take lip from foreigners
