I mean when you really sit down and think about it. Life is, in 100 or 200 years, no one is going to remember you. The things you did or didn't do. Even if you happen to write a book, that will eventually become meaningless, because one day, the sun is going to die out, and life on the planet will ceast. And when you think about it we haven't been on the planet that long.

So all in all, is life meaningless, are we just in a rat race of worthlessness?

But the people we have an impression will just pass away too.

Life has the meaning you give it. For me, if for nothing else, life will always have meaning when I look into my daughter's eyes.

Looked at in a Universal sense, there is no objective meaning to life. Rather, one should look at the lives we influence and the "meanings" thate we find on a daily basis.

Re God's Child (below): Buddah predates Jesus, and 2000 years from now, people will probably still remember Muhammad as well.

Re Additional Details: yes, they will pass away too; but I am interested in how we interact while we are alive. 500 years from now, I will no longer be around to care about what happens. All I can do is care now while I am here.

The lack of permanency does not make things meaningless. I, like many, feel a joy come over us when I see a rainbow. A rainbow is short lived, but it made a difference for a moment. That is all that is needed.

How about a shooting star? How about fireworks? There are many short-lived things...more short lived than we are. Also, people will not always remember that shooting star or firework or rainbow...but it had meaning in the moment.

Meaning is not derived from fame or permanency.

If electricity was self aware - what would electrical charge of a nerve impulse think of its importance? It is short lived and will be unremembered...but without it you could not move your arm, your would not see, etc.

Life is not meaningless...you just don't know your role in the whole.

It is interesting that you ask this question. It has plagued mankind for centuries. Even the wise king Solomon said life is vanity. However he also said three things that address your question. The first is that contrary to what scientists say the sun will always exist ( Ecclesiastes 1:4, Man's lifespan will not always be limited to a few short pointless years, (Proverbs 1: 20-22) and real purpose does not come from within and satisfying egoistic life, but from knowing and developing a relationship with the Creator of life. (Ecclesiastes 12:1-3, 12, 13)

It has all the meaning in the world... You are here today. The way that you should look at it is that the world 200 years from now or 200 years ago is meaningless. People are starving today! Tomorrow it will do them no good to help them, since tomorrow is meaningless as they are going to die today.

So you are here today. Life has meaning because you have meaning... You can help / change things today. Tomorrow is to late.

The Bible said, all we have is today. We need to do all we can today.

Does noone remember Abraham Lincoln? Confucious,Mohammed, Krista McAuliff? Elison Onizuka? Does noone remember Corrie Ten Boom, Billy Sunday, D.L. Moody?

Of course people are remembered after they die. I have pictures of 3xgreatgrandparents that I didn't know but I learned of them from people who did.

No, life is not meaningless. I live mine to give glory to God.

No, life is precious and should not be wasted. You have to give your life meaning.

If you want to make your life worthless and not do anything with your life, that's your choice and your choice alone.

that's a really sad way of looking at life my friend

maybe you should think about the great things you can do with life and how you can enjoy this very moment (atheist or non-atheist)

Not mine.

Those who love me ARE GOING to remember me.

I always did ANYTHING I felt like doing and have NO REGRETS.

I'm not worthless.

No, earthly life is the training ground of saints.

If you love, heaven begins here.

Heaven is our true homeland.
