He was able to prevent his death if he wanted to. To some Muslims Saddam is like Jesus dying for what he believed. Do Christians realize there worship of martyrdom is not that far from Islam?

The dictionary definition of suicide is willfully ending your own life. I believe there is a diferrence between making a decision to take your own life by overdose, hanging etc... and following a course of action for the greater good which may lead to your own death.

Jesus knew he was on a pre-destined path set by God, the last point this could have been avoided was in the garden of Gethsemane. After his arrest he was mostly a passenger it the following events.

If you look at the Gospel of Matthew and its desciption of the events in the garden of Gesthemane, Jesus prayed "Father take this cup from me" and "not my will but yours". Jesus didn't want to go to the cross and die but he did what God told him to. As it was in submission to God's will and not directly to his will that led to his arrest, trial and execution.

Therfore he did not commit suicide as it was not his choice it was God's, he was a soldier in a war against sin following God's orders.

To use a modern day analogy, this is the same as an officer in the Army ordering his men to carry out a mission that will surely result in their death but may ultimatlely win the war. E.g Ordering men to defend a hopeless position against better opposition in order to slow them down and allow time for re-enforcements to arrive.

The angry mob outside Pilates house ultimately decided to crucify him and not free him as Pilate's wife wanted. If God had wanted to save Jesus then this is the point where it all could have turned round, however God's plan was to allow Jesus to be sacrified on the cross as an atonement for the sins of the world.

This is different to Islamic martyrdom when a suicide bomber makes an active decision to end his life and cause as much damage to the enemy in the process. In that case it is suicide because it is by free will and the intention is to do evil not good.

Yes, jesus committed suicide. But what was really reprehensible is how he forced Judas into dropping a dime on him. Then Judas killed himself ANTOHER SUICIDE. Then all the christians up to this day blame the Jews for killing him.

If Judas hadn’t betrayed him, and the Romans nailed his hands and feet to boards, he would have had to hammer the nails himself, or the christians wouldn’t have a savior.

Any wonder David Koresh and Jim Jones took their sheep with them? What about the Heaven’s Gate guy? You know the flying saucer in the comet tale suicide pact?

There is a lot of suicide going on with the believers. Of course Charlie Manson (who also thought he was christ) had a different style, he just murdered people, so maybe he was more godlike that christlike.

The new testament makes it clear that he knew that Judas was betraying him. So in a way yes he did commit suicide. You are also right about Jesus' Martyrdom, he knowingly died for the sins of believing Christians.

So I guess its all about your belief system. If you are a Christian you believe that Martyrdom is justified through what Jesus did. If you are an islamist, you believe that your own Martyrdom is justified if you do it in the name of Allah. Sometime irregardless of whether you kill other muslims or innocents.

Either way I believe that Martyrdom is a way for humans to justify horrific events, and feel good about terrible behavior.

I don't think so, I think he was just a human being who was crucified by the Romans, but if Christianity were true and the father and the son were one and the father sacrificed the son who is himself, then I would call that suicide, but then again it isn't suicide, because he isn't really dead but only his physical body died.... and I get confused about this like about time travel stories from Star Trek.

Jesus did not take His own life. They executed Him. He gave His life willingly to a cause. Choosing not to save yourself when you can & suicide are different. Suicide means you did it at your own hands or you wanted to die. Jesus didn't want to die. He prayed for this to not happen in Matthew 26:39, 39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." The cup being his impending execution. He could have saved himself, but He didn't because He was giving His life, not taking it.

Jesus did not commit suicide any more than a soldier that falls on a grenade to prevent his fellow soldiers from being injured commits suicide.

Yes, I am aware that Saddam is seen as a martyr by many of his followers. I think it was a BIG mistake to have him executed. He is more powerful dead than alive. It would have been better to let him slowly wither away.

Historically there is evidence to support that what he did in the final days of his life were a kind of suicidal act in order to secure himself as a martyr.

Did Jesus commit suicide?...umm..probably.

But then again would not we all?

Jesus Christ (the fictional charactor), was a child born from a rape. The rapist was God himself. You see, God has a desire and thirst for virgins, so when he saw Mary tiptoe'ing through the tulips he though to himself: "I sho would love to tip toe through her two lips..heh"

So of course, Jesus later found out this in his later years and decided to get himself nailed up and put on display.

Thus why he dried "Father, why hath thou forsaken me?!" *dead*

Yea....I think he may have commited suicide.

But like it really matters what he did anyways, it's all from a story. Thus...it didn't actually happen.

*Cheers

He had to die so we could be saved, not for his own glory.

I don't worship martyrdom, I worship Jesus.

He wasn't a martyr, he was our savior who people are willing to die for.

Jesus died so we could have eternal life with him, not believe in something.

Even the demons of hell believe in Jesus.
