My 3 1/2 year old really really really wanted a "ladder" bed. I wasn't comfortable with the height of bunk bed, but I found this awesome bed by step 2. It has just 4 steps, and the mattress ends up being at about the same height as a kitchen counter. It still has raised sides so no falling out. Plus, there's tons of space under the bed to build a fort in or use for storage. Home depot has the cheapest shipping on it (unless you live in a big enough city to have walmart ship it to a local store for free, then order it from walmart). Use a piece of plywood or "bunky board" under the mattress (no boxpring). It only took us 20 minutes to assemble, and we did it in the middle of the night and then put our son in it so he woke up in it the next morning (it was his Christmas present)

I think it depends on the children. I can't say I would put them in a toddler bed, the weight limit on most only goes up high enough for a 4 year old so that might be a waste of money. Is there room for 2 twin size beds? I can tell you this. At age 2 1/2 my oldest was sleeping in a loft type bed (like a bunk bed without the bottom bunk, it has a fort type area underneath). He's still in it at 4 1/2 and has never once fallen out or had any problems at all. It does have a tent over the top of it so that would help prevent him from falling. But, he does not move at all when he sleeps; he is a VERY deep sleeper. I have an 18 month old and there is no way he will be going in that bed until close to age 4 (at least), he moves around all night long. I think that is a big factor when considering a bunk bed for a young child.

My boys (ages 3 and almost 5) sleep in bunk beds. The 3 y/o on the bottom and the older boy on the top. The bunk beds that we bought has a railing that goes almost all the way around the top bunk. They have been sleeping in them since before Christmas and haven't had any problems with them yet. We skipped the toddler bed stage all together. I couldn't see buying a toddler bed that is still the size of a crib and only getting to use it for a little while. We went straight to twin beds for the boys, then onto these bunk beds. Since they share a room, it's great to have the extra space in their room. If it's just the one child you could use the top bunk to store things like teddy bears and stuffed animals. Just evaluate how much you want to spend on the bed and go from there. Good luck!!!

Well, My son never liked to sleep in a toddler bed, and it was a waste of money when we bought that 5 in 1 crib, we went out and bought him a twin sized bed. it's big and he has been sleeping in it since he was 13 months, he is now 27 months. About bunk beds, I would wait until the child is 6 or 7 for bunk beds. My brother jumped off his bunk bed and broke his collarbone. My sister and I slept in bunk beds while we were in Spain, and she even rolled off the top with the protector on and secure, and fell to the ground. It's not safe at all. I would never trust a 3 yr old to play in his room , if he had a bunkbed, he will climb even if you try to take the stairs away, he will try. It's not a good idea. Buy the boy his favorite character sheets. My son loves Thomas the tank engine and loves going to sleep.

If they don't have to share a room with a sibling then, I would go with the twin bed so that the temptation to climb onto the top bunk, won't be an issue. You can buy a mesh guard for the side of the bed so they don't fall out. We didn't have any trouble getting my daughter to sleep in her new bed.

My son (just turned 3) skipped the toddler bed altogether because we personally think toddler beds are a waste of money considering the child doesn't grow with it.
We have a futon bunk bed. My son currently sleeps in the futon bed below that is always set out as a bed for my mum when she comes by...when my daughter joins him (she's 19 months), they'd probably sleep together in the bottom bunk or he sleep on top and her on the bottom.
My son is pretty good sleeping in his bed, and if yours is too you shouldn't have any problems.,

go with the twin because its their own bed and you wont have to worry about higher falls etc like bunks. also with my kids we moved them from cribs to twins so that it wasnt spending lots of money plus you can do different sheets and just make sure to get a waterproof twin size matress protector to prolong the matress life and the bed will last many years. my kids share a room right now both have twin beds lots of room to play less falls and no problems

we got my boys bunkbeds while they were 5 and 3. they have had no problems.
we put my daughter in a twin bed with rails at 18 months. we used a bunky (sp?) board instead of box springs so it would be lower. again
